Yah, we can dream, can't we.
Even if it was $499... people are still going to bitch about it not having a fast enough CPU, crap video card, makes too much noise, doesn't have PCI slots, enough USB ports, scratches too easily...

I suspect alot of PC users will buy one, if for no other reason, then to manage their music collection. They will then begin to use it for web browsing, email and the rest of the iLife apps.
Their PC could literally be their game machine and the rest would be done on the Mac. I could easily see that. $500 is the cost of a high-end video card. It's nothing. Add lots of ram to it and your doing fine.
Now if Apple could only do something like the Windows Media Center 2005! Include a TV tuner in the next rev b. models on the imac-mini (or whatever they decide to call it). Suddenly, it becomes what drives your stereo and your TV.
So this may be the start of Apple invading the home again. The first iPods were cool, but nothing compared to the current crop. Imagine the possibilities at Rev C or D?!?!!
And it could stay a G4 or even go multi-core.

IMHO it will be called 'iMac mini'. (Cube is dead, X is reserved for servers)
Although I'd prefer 'eMac mini' leaving room for a headless with the iMac's G5 board.

I hope this $499 thinggie never materializes.
IMHO our saving grace with regards to viruses and spyware is the high cost of entry. Once all these teenage hackers-in-training are able to afford macs, we will surely see a rise in exploited vulnerabilites.
I want Apple's marketshare at 3-5%.

If that ever happens, then when the virus/spyware tries to install itself, and the system asks for your admin password...then don't enter it.
Most of us want the Mac market share to increase so we won't have to beg software & hardware vendors to make their products Mac compatible.

Hmmm. I must have missed the thread where you were designated as the spokesman for most Mac users. Regardless, I'll simply speak for myself and give only my opinion.
Haven't you seen the slew of OS X security updates that have been posted by Apple over the past few months? SecureMac.com's site does a pretty good job of discussing some of these vulnerabilities and exploits. There are other vulnerabilities as well, and more would surely emerge (or be discovered and exploited) if the Mac user base was anywhere near as large as Microsoft's.
As for Apple's marketshare, the Mac user base is large enough, and it is not as price-sensitive as PC users. Hence, there will always be compatible products and software. With the exception of certain software titles (mostly games), I can't remember the last time I was unable to find products compatible with my Macs. The first year after OS X was released - that was probably the last time (if I didn't want to use Classic).

spacefreak,
I don't agree. A low cost Mac is necessary to expand the market. Apple isn't dying, but Windows is still growing... so market share is shrinking even though Apple is doing well. I'm not trying to paint a doomsday picture, but when the market share reaches < 1% what software company would consider making software for our platform of choice? Naturally there will be some diehards around, but the realist in me says "we need more homes with Macs" It's as simple as that.
Mac Security - We should be happy that Apple is patching the holes in our OS. It's a GOOD THING because they are finding vulnerabilities... many of which aren't even used by a large majority of average OS X users. We can't say we don't want the teenage hackers out there... because they usually become the adult programers.
Mac Users Aren't Price Sensitive? I don't think so... every time it comes to buy a new Mac, I take a hard long look at the PC side of the fence. The echo of "gee... I could get XYZ for 1/2 as much... and all I really do is surf, email and a little design on my home computer..." cross my mind. Ultimately I buy a Mac, but MANY of my friends don't. Some start out with buying "another" computer which is a Mac. Then they ditch their old Mac altogether with their next purchase.
