Recovering the drive using Time Machine?

I'm upgrading my 200GB Hard drive to 400GB and was wondering if Leopard's time machine can be used to recover the drive? Or should I looking at something else like CCC?

Time machine can do this. Whether or not CCC is a better bet for you depends on a number of factors. CCC is just that - a carbon copy clone - you end up with a bootable snapshot of your drive. Time machine is a historical record - not bootable, but complete.

But if nothing's wrong with the source drive, I'd just do a restore to the new drive using Disk Utility. There was another thread discussing TM full restores, and at least one person said he wasn't too happy with the results.

The Restore tab of Disk Utility. Drag the source disk (the disk with the data) on to source and the destination disk on to destination and then click Restore.

That makes sense but probably won't work with my iMac. Well, I guess I could delete my entire TM backup and then use my external FW800 drive.

Actually, Time Machine is designed to completely restore your disk as you boot from the Leopard disk and re-install your system.
It will ask you for an existing Time Machine backup.

More than fine. Not only do you get your restore ... you also get to keep all your historical backups in time machine (i.e. you retain the ability to find things that you may have deleted last week because your full time machine history is still intact).

Thanks for the responses-
So Leopard Boot CD will recognize the TM drive and give me an option to use that? Or do I have to look somewhere in the installer.

It will see the TM drive as a TM backup.
|

At the end of the 10.5 install it will ask if you'd like to migrate a different Mac and one option is to use a Time Machine backup.
I've used it and it works very well.

Isn't there also a TM backup restore in the Installer DVD's utility menu?
