I'm not sure but there is good size airport on the far left side of the map. You can even see a plane on the runway. Also, if you follow the road there are a few strange looking "compounds" scattered around. Very cool link.

Area 51 isn't in their map database. Believe me, I looked.
Though I'm not sure what the hell that thing is in the link, probably something new-age'y or tribal. But it's definately nothing to do with Groom Lake.
edit: Heh, "Groom Lake, NV" doesn't even return anything.
edit 2: This whole area is Nellis Air Force Base. What's interesting to note is that while some odd things are clearly visable, things which have already been photographed and known to be of sensitive nature aren't. Case in point, I can google for sattelite imagery of the base and Area 51 with fairly good detail. However Google doesn't seem to show anything that resembles the gigantic landing strip that Area 51 has, nor anything else.

I notice how odd some things are like on day 1. the first thing I looked up was the White house, and it's all jpeg'ed out. Sort of funny. So began my new found image art project.
oh.....and zoom all the way out and pull in 1 direction, to simulate the globe spinning. you can go and go and then the US shows back up. thats just funny.

Are we sure that some of these shapes aren't from White Sands AFB? They look like targets/missile test areas.
A lot of these areas are just big military playgrounds. Who knows what kind of goofy stuff is out there.

Definitely not White Sands. This range is part of the Nellis AFB complex in Nevada. Just zoom out and switch back and forth from Satellite to Map to see the location. These ranges are all over the United States near Air Force and Navy bases.
Here is a range I used to use a lot in Utah ( link)
Here is one southwest of Phoenix ( link)
This is the dry lakebed at White Sand that the space shuttle landed on once ( link)
Here is an airplane over the runway at Edwards AFB. ( link). You can see the airplane and it's shadow. A T-38 is getting waiting to takeoff and another is taxiing out.

For all of you Safari-using Google Maps enthusiasts, I recommend upgrading to OS X 10.3.9. It includes Safari 1.3 which is much, much faster at runninf JavaScript (and the difference is quite obvious when using GM).

Man, that's addicting.
I'm having fun retracing the trip through the Grand Canyon. Last summer (after 15 years on the waitlist), we got our permit to run our own trip (i.e. no guides) on the Colorado. Google Maps has an absurdly high resolution for some sections of the river:
Here's Glen Canyon Dam, mile -4
Confluence with the Little Colorado with its stunning turqoise color, mile 62
Here you can see the Colorado in different moods: one photo taken while it's running clear and green, the other a healthy roiling red
The South Kaibab and Bright Angel footbridges at Phantom Ranch, below the South Rim viewing area, mile 88. If you've ever driven to the Grand Canyon, you probably looked down towards this
Granite Rapids, mile 94. Very nearly flipped here.
Crystal rapids, unfortunately in the shade, mile 98. The deadliest rapid in North America.
Here's two rafts parked at the side of the river
End of the line: Hoover Dam, river mile 270 or so
