Too many options to make a poll. I for one use and love Adium, iChat still needs alot of work before I will use it steadily.

MSN with some that I have to.

I actually have been using Yahoo Messenger a lot to talk to my family in Germany as iChat refuses to connect on the isight webcam, but yahoo messenger works just fine!

Have had a lot of problems with iChat and the web cam so have been gravitating towards the yahoo.

When it comes down to it, I think, AIM works best. File tranfers are seamless, profiles can have different fonts and colors, buddy icons & animated gifs, etc. etc.

Prove me wrong if you can..trust me...I'd love to stop with AIM and I've been meaning to, it's just that all the features that I love that work best with AIM, sadly.

Adium 2.0 binary all the way.

AIM's messages take a little longer than I like.

iChat.

I think it's pretty slick. I really like the way it uses the pictures from Address Book. Tres cool. The other chat clients annoy me a bit--MSN is a dog; Yahoo! is kinda fugly; and the others like Fire never seem to connect all the time. Thus, I stick with iChat.

My user name is AuPhalanx.

Have fun... Tony.

iChat and AIM are the only ones that can work through my college's proxy. MSN won't for the Mac client for some reason. That said MSN is PURE CRAP, I use it only because every Canadian and their dog uses it. But yah MSN sucks, iChat should have a more proteus like interface but I just got sick of proteus constant crashing and screwing up and not saving any of the changes I'd make.

iChat really does need some AIM specific features, and I would KILL for MSN compatibility.

You used to be able to. Then they removed the status menu. Don't try to ask them about it though, they'll get all hostile on you.

There's no more contact list editor. Its being completely overhauled - and no date has been given for the completion. So if you want to add buddies or delete buddies, that'll need to be done in some other client.

The buddy groups are now ordered alphabetically, not the way that they are left on the AOL server. I found this really annoying since I have my list a specific way.

For me at least, the buddy list is screwed up (contacts all in lowercase). This doesn't seem to be a problem for other people though.

MSN. The stupid thing always pop up on my XP box. The MSN is the most annoying thing ever. People always assume you're open to chat just because you're online. I hate it. iChat seems better on that matter. I can dismiss a conversation without feeling guilty, and it doesn't makes you "available" without you doing it purposely.

Everything else is right, I think, but this isn't. I still order manually and it works.

do i just not know anything (about im clients... ok, fine. everything else too)? or does adium not allow you to just see the away message without having to actually message the person?

I havent been able to find a way to look at people's away message without messaging them. everything else works fine though.

i used to use proteus (for both icq and ichat (aim)). the last version was a bit too unstable for me (too many bugs), so i'm back to ichat av and the regular icq client.

i tried entering my icq contacts in ichat, but for some reason it doesn't seem to work (even with those who have the newest version of icq lite on the pc )

ichat needs: pop checking, real icq integration, and the possibility for people to see "away messages", even if they are using a different client than ichat (aim/icq pc etc.)!

I have everything. But, I prefer ICQ. I like it's implementation of history the best. And, I like it's non-candy-too-big-to-be-useful interface.

Do your buddies show up in all lowercase and without formatting in the list (actual buddy names, not aliases)?

I use both AIM 4.7 and iChat. I like iChat for the AV Feature. It is great to talk to my friends who have Macs and iChatAV and not have to type to them, Call me lazy.

I have to have one that does the all, and Fire so far is the best one out there.

And it's free to boot.

You can even download and compile daily builds.

Adium 1.6 doesn't, Adium 2 lets you read away messages, save file transfers, see buddy icons, et cetera.

Proteus with MSN account, and MSN Messenger for transferring files occasionally. MSN is the only option here in Europe (well this part of europe anyway) nobody uses something else.

Proteus for ICQ, AIM, and MSN.
Yes, it has it's problems, but I hate having 3 open instant messaging apps open.
I used to ue fire but I prefer Proteus.

Could not have said it better. I use the original client, but used to use Proteus - it is just too unstable. And I have the same experiences with Fire.

Well, the time is now. Option-click the file menu and watch the options for setting an away change before your eyes.

Agasthya, I'm surprised to see the negative tone here, since you've been very helpful to others in the past on our forum.

- We gave warning that the contact list editor would be missing for a little bit while it was improved and rewritten. Declaring the new builds as "awful" because of this is unfair.

- We've stated many times that the status menu will return following a revision of our status system.

- Your capitalization issue was noted by a few other users in this thread on our forums. It will be looked into once the contact list editor is complete.

MSN. No other option (what with Fire etc not supporting file transfers). It's annoying how it's lacking so many features compared to the Windows version - you can't even have a little pic of yourself or see anyone else's! I don't get why everyone here says it's a crap piece of software though - runs fine on this iBook 500.
