Hi guys,

I just picked up a closeout demo powermac on sale. Its a Quad G5 2.5ghz with the standard 6600 256mb video and 1.5gb of ram. It does not have a warranty. I had to reseat the video card to get both ports working but now everything seems to be fine. I paid $1349. I looked on ebay and quad 2.5's with a warranty seem to be going for 2k and up. I think I got a pretty good deal. I know this thing is about 1.5 years old and the latest mac pros would be generally faster (especially after CS3 comes out). How does it compare to the iMac core 2 duo's? If I sold this G5 I think I could make some money but a new mac pro and monitor would still be more than I am willing to spend right now. I currently have a 20" core duo iMac but it is sold and will be going away soon. My plan was to wait for updates before getting anything new and then this G5 popped up. they had it sitting for several weeks at ~1800 and then dropped the price to 1399. I managed to get another 50 knocked off plus I got a discounted aperture ($40 off of education price) . So with my 20" going away soon should I hang on to the G5 and use it until the new stuff comes out or sell it right away and try and make some money? Will I still be able to sell the G5 for ~2k a few months from now?

that is a really really really great price. amazing deal

it will be faster than the current imac and macbook pros even once cs3 comes out, plus you can get more than 3gb of ram in it which is the max for the imac and macbook pro. i've used both the imac and macbook pro with core 2 duos and they don't even compare to the quad G5 with 4.5GB ram i'm on right now. still, im not so sure whether you would be able to get ~$2k for it once CS3 pops up, since most people might not want a G5 then. right now i am sure you might even be able to get close to $3k, depending on how its specced... if money is your motive, i would sell this week. if it's performance, i'd keep it UNLESS you're going to get a mac pro, which is obviously faster. the imac or macbook pro are not.

RAM is still considerably more affordable for the G5s, is it not? In my mind the additional cost of a few gigs of RAM for the Mac Pros is an often underestimated hit to the pocketbook. That machine is a hell of a buy, you would have been stupid to pass it up.

It's cheaper than for a Mac Pro, but 4.5 gigs like in mine is still quite a chunk. 1 Gb is about $50.
