Male dominance behavior, perhaps? Wouldn't acknowledging the attractiveness of another male be saying, in essence, "there is a man who is superior to me" (at least in looks)? Aren't we men all hard-wired, and socialized as well, to always be strong, to show no fear or weakness? Being willing to admit you are not the alpha male is sort of a weakness. Obviously, this is all gross speculation on my part, but it makes sense to me in a way.
Of course, I like to turn this notion on its head from time to time. When a buddy and me go out together I point out to him men who I think are good looking and he points out to me women who he thinks are good looking. We score points if our assumptions are correct about the other person's response. Of course, when we are out together frequently women will flirt with him and men flirt with me which we both get a kick out of cause niether one of us gets attention from the group we want.
