I'm looking for a scanner to scan photos and some text. Which of these two scanners would you recommend?

Buy the Cannon. HP builds nice hardware but their drivers are garbage.

Macworld just reviews the HP and said the hardware was nice but the software was terrible.

I totally agree. I'm looking at my three year old 5370c HP. It worked fine with OS 9 but HP has been an idiot's butt about updating the drivers for OS X. It's not as if it's a difficult thing. They just see Apple as the competition and so are SLOOOOW at coming out with new software.
As such, I bought the Canon Lide 80 for my secretary. She's very pleased. The learning curve was stiff since we both have HP machines at home. You sort of get used to one thing or another. Canon's software works fine, it's just different.

I would say the Canon.
Look at Vuescan: http://hamrick.com/
It may seem pricey, but over time you'll be glad you did, and you will care more about the scanner hardware than the software (Through the use of Vuescan, plenty of good scanners with poor Mac support have been made into great scanners for Mac users).

John, it uses the USB 2....
I have heard that the text pages were not the best on this model, because this is the one that I was going to get - until I read that in a review.
Maybe someone who owns this model can tell us how well they like it.

You could also check out this Month's issue of MacAddict, they reviewed about a dozen scanners.
