Seems like everyone is hanging up on AT&T's servers, not Apple's. SURPRISE.

Well, after many more failed attempts I tried ordering from the new apple store app on my iphone. It's fast and seems to go very smoothly until you have to enter your social security number and zip code. It doesn't give an error....the app crashes.

I literally laughed out loud when it happened.

The apple store for iPhone app is finally loading the store, but it crashes on me the instant it tries to check eligibility. It doesn't even ask which model I want to preorder.

Has anyone tried preordering by phone?

Awaspaas, what is your secret!?

Edit: I lied about it not asking me which model. I was on the reservation option not the preorder option (oops). It still quits on me instantly though.

Same thing happens to me, although sometimes it just quits back to the main screen of the app instead of crashing.

I actually got passed the Eligibility Check once this morning, it was right after the Apple STore went back online at about 8:00 am Eastern.

I got kicked out when trying to finish my order. Haven't been able to go past the AT&T Eligibility Check since then.

Not to keep asking questions, but why does the 3GS have the option to preorder with a june 24 ship date? The phone is already in the stores. Is it because it will come with iOS4? Couldn't they save themselves a few hits on the apple store by just letting people update the OS at home?

Well, it seems that mine finally went through! I took a screenshot of the page and will be calling in a few days just to make sure it worked properly, just in case. I still haven't received a confirmation email.

I'm tired of trying. This is so ridiculous it's not even funny anymore. All this difficulty for a simple pre-order. I never imagined it would be this much trouble. I knew the website would be slow but not being able to complete a simple pre-order for the past 4.5 hours is a flat out failure on both parties.

Can you imagine how crappy it's going to be on the 24th when everyone's trying to activate through iTunes? It was fairly smooth when I got the original iPhone. The 3G was supposed to be in store activation only but the servers were overwhelmed so Apple employees sent many people home to activate. Due to activation overload it took several hours to have a working phone. I don't even know what to expect for this time around. My excitement for today is completely gone and that sucks.

Oh well, back to the real world for a while. I might try again tonight but then again maybe not.

I may have spoken too soon - just got this in the email:

Thank you for choosing AT&T.

Unfortunately, we were either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online. As a result, your order has been canceled.

If you would like to purchase additional lines of service, please visit one of our AT&T retail locations and present your identification to our representatives. They will be happy to help you purchase new wireless devices, accessories, and service.

Go to att.com/storelocator to find a store near you.

We apologize for the inconvenience and look forward to serving you.

Thank you.

AT&T

This is a system-generated message from a send only address. Please do not reply to this email.
Although this is probably due to an earlier failed attempt because it refers to a different order number than the one I got on the confirmation page. I haven't received any confirmation for my "completed" order though and it doesn't show up on the order status page.

I did the iPhone app method and it worked immediately for me. It says I have a reservation, but I haven't received an email yet.

I tried to do it again for my wife's phone (on the same plan), but it says it can't make a reservation at this time. I'm trying it from my iPhone using my iTunes acct, so I'm not sure if that is a problem.

Just got the email confirmation, but it says it will cost $699! I'm assuming I can sort that out next thursday. It did the same thing to my dad. We are both eligible for upgrades.

Tried the iPhone app again and while I haven't received an email confirmation, my phone reservation is showing up under the "Reservations" tab. So, in theory, a phone is waiting for me at Lenox.

Apple to offer unlocked iPhones in Canada - The Globe and Mail

Apple Inc. (AAPL-Q258.344.061.59%) will sell the new iPhone 4 unlocked in Canada, allowing consumers to buy the phone online and shop it around to the wireless service provider of their choice.

Though Apple will also sell the phones through its retail stores and the stores of carriers offering service for the device, such as Rogers Communications Inc. (RCI.B-T37.500.441.19%) and Telus Corp. (T-T39.130.340.88%), the Cupertino, Calif.-based technology giant has decided to sell the phone “commitment-free” to customers who may want to roam internationally.

Having an unlocked phone means users can take the handset around the world, popping in SIM cards for other global carriers that use the same wireless technology standard.

So far in this country, if you buy an iPhone from a certain provider you have to stick with that provider. Usually, the carrier chips in a subsidy that lowers the cost of the device in exchange for a long-term contract. Apple’s new offer changes the game.

Yeah, what's up with that anyway? You'd think a quick note about how the white version wouldn't be available from day one would have made its way into the keynote. I want the black iPhone but I think it sucks for those who were looking forward to pre-ordering the white one today. The lack of communication going on here is very bad.

In the end we'll all get our phones, and that's great, but the experience so far has been really bad.

To join in on one of the least relevant side topics: the phone is not already in stores. The 3G S up til now has only been in 16 and 32 GB capacities. The new option after the 24th is 8 GB only.

Just out of concern that my first one didn't go through correctly, I tried the Apple Store app and it worked. I just got the confirmation email, but it says $599. It must just be using the full price in the email, since the app said it was only $199.

It took me about two hours to get it to work this morning. I finally got through at about 3:45 AM PT. Home delivery wouldn't work so I am just going to pick it up at the Fashion Show Mall store which is just 10 minutes from my place.

Funnily, the Apple Store app says you can reserve your iPhone 4 “without entering your AT&T account information.” Then after you tap Reserve and pick your model, it asks for your AT&T account information.

I managed to get through without any issues this morning at around 7:15 Eastern. I chose to fetch it from the Apple Store since they open at 7. I would've liked a white iPhone, but since they're not available I got a black one.

I think you'll be able to pre-order (well, in theory if they ever get the servers running) for the launch day until they run out of inventory. Everyone is rushing to do it today so they can have it the first day its available.

Now I spend the next 9 days worrying about whether it will actually show up or not.

I've seen the "you're eligible for a phone at this price" screen three times since lunch. When I click continue from there, it times out. It seems like that's better than it was during the morning.

The apple store on the iphone now doesn't crash, but says that the server isn't responding. It looks like it offers to make a reservation to speak with someone in my local apple store instead.

To get back to a much earlier question in this thread about upgrading from an original iphone I spoke with ATT and they said it would be $30/month for unlimited data. They also said they would adjust the text message plan so that overages would only be 5 cents each instead of 10 cents.

I guess it just depends on whether you want it shipped to your door or if you want to go in to pick it up knowing it will be a mad house on launch day. If you reserve it does it give you the proper price based on your upgrade eligibility?

This reminds of all the BS that happened during the original iPhone launch. I waited in line all day for the iPhone to be released on Friday at 6pm. I tried to activate iPhone when I got home but the AT&T servers where slammed. After 12 phone calls to customer service and a couple of visits to the Apple & AT&T stores, my phone was finally activated on Sunday at 10am. It turns out that the AT&T servers would only authenticate orange accounts and not blue. (blue accounts = prior to AT&T/Cingular merge, orange accounts = after.)

It took another 2 days for AT&T to get Visual Voice Mail to work on my iPhone. I was finally up and running at 100% almost a week after I bought the phone.

Slick shoes?! Are you crazy?!
