My brother found this small metal object in his house the other day and was wondering what it might be. Any thoughts?

It'll be a key for something which isn't all that important, but important enough that you don't want anyone unlocking it by accident. I worked in a cinema that had similarly low tech keys for sidelights when they didn't come on automatically.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Doesn't seem like a properly sized hole, or a rigid enough stabby.

So, was there some form of global paperclip shortage which necessitated these?

Why can't you lock suitcases. I always do, but I don't travel much.

Unless your suitcase sports a TSA lock, it will be busted open and permanently damaged.

Have you travelled since 9/11 ?

If you fly with a firearm, you can use giant padlocks if you like. Actually, you have to...

Note to TSA: I expect you to steal my shit, so I'm okay with that, but could you put the stuff you don't steal back in properly?

You also have to declare it when you check in at the gate, so that the TSA isn't surprised when they see it. They then take real good care of those suitcases, because they don't want to have to tell their boss that they lost track of it.

In fact, I've heard that photographers who have to check their camera gear will buy a starter pistol and put it in with their gear just to make sure the TSA doesn't mess with it.
