Bit confused, when I shut down, I start up, but the computer does not ask for a password.
When I log out it does ask for a password, but Is a log out a true shut down?.
How do you go on vacation, shut down, but have it so the computer needs the password to open up?

Go to System Preferences and click on Users & Groups. Find your account and then click on Login Options. Automatic Login is what you want to turn off.

RJ/ OTHERS.
Just got back from trip. But undid the autolog on.Did a shut down, screen goes black, yet 1/2 later a screen saver (which I did not choose) come up. and click on keyboard and log in option for users are there. What is this?
I then did another shut down, and when back from trip, same thing, screen saver is up, not true shutdown.

Your machine did not shut down.
I suggest you select "Shut Down" from the Apple menu.

If your machine is showing a screen saver, it's not shut down.

Choose shut down and watch it shut down. The screen should go black, the sleep LED if you have one will turn off entirely and you should hear the HDD click off unless you have SSD. Fans will also stop. The caps lock light will not illuminate when pressed if the machine is off. If in doubt, pull the AC and battery.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Also, pressing a key on the keyboard will NOT make it start up.

If it can be "woken up", it was sleeping, not shut down.

Actually it can be woken by a network command, if that feature is enabled.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Is it possible it it has a scheduled startup in Energy Saver?
System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Hit the 'Schedule' button, see if anything is ticked.

Yes, I had a schedule to wake up. That must be it. Gotta be more vigilant to turn that off!
