Will Google Video survive or will You Tube survive or will they both stay alive and serve different markets?

Now I shall read the article.

In a statement, Google said YouTube will operate as an independent unit of Google once the deal closes and will retain the YouTube brand name. The companies added that no YouTube workers will lose their jobs as a result of the acquisition and that Google will maintain its own online video business.

I think Google will be the end of YouTube. It will become a syndicate of Google Video and quietly fade away.

Billion, actually.

It means all those lawsuits that people were holding against Youtube are now going to come flying out. Google has, seemingly, endless pockets and they will paying for these lawsuits for years.

It's impossible that Youtube will be able to stay the same as it is now. The copyright protection is going to be insane.

Sounds kind of like a Microsoft move that requires two steps:
1) You have a competitor that does something better than you, but has less money that you.
2) You buy them.

Would anyone have sold YouTube to Google? I mean the money ($1.7 billion!?) sounds very tempting but here we finally have a Company who have started to get a good reputation and look as though they could make it big-time. I love Google but was it best to sell up YouTube? Hmmm, probably...

Yes, but the YouTube model has been criticized heavily lately, mostly because of their lack of revenue sharing. Google will most likely put their ads on it and make buckets. Who knows, maybe at some point Google will share those buckets of $ with users.

The appeal of YouTube was that it wasn't Google or Yahoo! or Microsoft.

Google has become what Microsoft became in past years - a tach giant that is too hungry for it's own good. Google can't even get their "beta" programs to gold despite years of "testing".

The appeal of youtube is not that its not google or yahoo. Its its that you could put whatever you want on there, and its really easy to skip around as well as share videos with no bandwidth or technology cost to you.

YouTube will be the same, except that it will make money. And it will still be called YouTube.

Then how would you discuss the failings of Google video or Yahoo! video despite their having much deeper pockets?

IMO the main reason YouTube is popular is because it would accept copyrighted material, no questions asked.

Without the copyrighted material, YouTube is a heluvalot less interesting.

Exactly. If they legitimize YouTube it'll merely turn into Napster 2.

The YouTube purge has begun: YouTube deletes 30,000 files

TOKYO — The popular video-sharing site YouTube deleted nearly 30,000 files after a Japanese entertainment group complained of copyright infringement.

The Japan Society for Rights of Authors, Composers and Publishers, found 29,549 video clips such as television shows, music videos and movies posted on YouTube's site without permission, an official from the group, Fumiyuki Asakura, said Friday.

They are licencing some music though:

"YouTube has been negotiating with leading copyright holders and reached agreement with several letting the Web site post copyright music videos and other content in exchange for sharing ad revenue.

The company agreed to deploy an audio-signature technology that can spot a low-quality copy of a licensed clip. YouTube would have to substitute an approved version or remove the material automatically.

YouTube has licensing deals with CBS Corp. and three major recording companies — Warner Music Group Corp., Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group and Sony BMG Music Entertainment, which is a joint venture between Sony Corp. and Bertelsmann AG."

Still, Dakar's reference to Napster 2 is an appropriate one methinks.
