It's out, I hope it's all you wanted it be and more...as for me, I'm staying about as far away from this as possible.

not an impressive update.

I'm still amazed to see how MS tries to imitate the cocoa look and feel thru carbon (see the new archive reader )

For those who have installed it, what has changed? Just wondering so if it's nothing major, I won't have to bother with downloading

I LIKE the looks of that MSN Explorer. Definitely looks like Microsoft put more thought into that than AOL did for AOL v.X.

the one thing i hate most about msn messenger is the inability to make aliases or nicknames (whatever they are called) for your contacts. There's nothing more annoying then going online and having to right click on your contacts name to see who you are talking to. Why do people insist on giving themselves stupid quotes as names and changing them every day!!!!

Proteus rocks... I just wish you could put your contact list into that drawer... I'd organize more if I stayed in OS X more. Anyway, I havn't even been able to connect to MSN through MSN, it's ironic that proteus has more reliable connections than the offical MSN client.

But yeah proteus = 100% better than MSN messanger, if they could make it as snappy as proteus then I might use it, for now I keep it on my HD for file transfer since when I try that for proteus it messes up.

yeah, well when Proteus or Fire can handle three person conversations, call me back. It sucks to be the one who fcuks things up in a conversation because you're the only Mac user. MSN 3.5 better be more snappy - ie it better be able to keep up with text input on my iBook 500!

Guess there are very few Mac users out there who like Messenger then. I happen to think the interface looks just fine. A lot better than the Windows version.

v3.5 has new sounds (well, they give the option to use the old ones if you don't like them), ability to change you nickname on the fly (just click on your name in the main window, don't have to open the prefrences), time stamps on messages, message archives (new and neat, but I doubt very useful), and you can fianlly turn off icon bouncing.

I don't find anything wrong with people changing their nicknames. It's a very good feature when used well, with the right people. I suppose if you had a /very/ large contacts list it might get confusing.
One thing I noticed about this new version is that it now has ads. The previous ones didn't for me, since I have Office installed, but I guess for some reason it doesn't recognize that anymore (there's probably a fix for that, but it doesn't really matter).

It has two things I'd really been wanting:

* Groups are now supported (a la the PC version). No longer is it just big fat groups "online" and "offline" -- you can have groups like "work" "friends" ... and drag contacts there. The groups are the same on the PC or Mac versions, so that's nice.

* Easy archival. You can archive each message and recall convos whenever you want (without having to do a "save as..."). Used it once now and it's pretty slick. You can do a "save as" as text from the message or from the archive, should you want.

I use the Microsoft Messenger network because that's what we use here at work... so I like it. I don't use the AIM network so iChat ain't the thing for me now.

Ah, I totally overlooked that option. How handy.

I also noticed that it no longer opens IE when you click the New Mail popup or the Mail button...instead it opens Safari?! Camino is my default browser.

So really...anybody have a clue as to why I am getting an error for a "MSN Messenger Daemon" after each quit of MSN? I've re-installed, deleted prefs, cursed Bill Gates, thought it over in the bathroom and still no luck.

Thanks.

Craptastic.

~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/ is back.

I moved it to ~/Library/Preferences/ ages ago, and Microsoft Office has respected that just fine. However, MSN 3.5 re-created it, placed a folder called 'MSN Messenger History' inside of it. Fair enough, I think, I'll just move it inside of my pre-exisiting 'Microsoft User Data' folder. Alas, it does not work; MSN does not see the archived messages when you try to look at them. Move the folder back inside of ~/Documents, and it does.

Before I get too angry, does anyone know of some way to change the message archive's location?

If there is no way, I guess I'll have to switch off the archiving and go back to using Fire...

I believe a "symbolic link" would do the trick if an alias fails. To create your sym link, you can download cocktail and use that.
Hope this helps you..

Or in the Terminal even. However, before I resort to such tactics, I prefer to find out whether there is a way within the application to do what I want. And, if there is not, then I usually still don't make a symbolic link, rather I refuse to use the software. It's a matter of principle. Or anal retentiveness. One of the two.

It's definately much nicer to use than the old 3.0 release. It's still got some rough edges.

Clicking the dock icon no longer reopens & focuses the main contacts list when there's conversation windows open, which is what I hated most about 3.0.
