really want iLife, BUT should I just sit on my money until Tiger comes out in a few months? Will it be included in Tiger? (for a few more bucks!)

IS anyone here getting it?

just wondering

It'll be included with new Macs but it won't be bundled with Tiger.

None of the new junk does it for me as all I really use is iPhoto most of the time. I can't image many home users need HD in iMovies right now.

If HD tickles your fancy, go for it.

the only improvement that piqued my interest was in GarageBand... and while this might make me use it more, right now I don't use GB enough to justify getting iLife '05.

Besides, I need to save up money for iLife '07

The iPhoto update is sort of required (a speed boost & all the new image manipulation stuff). The iDVD update is sort of cool, but I don't use it much. The iTunes update will be free anyway. and I have no intrest in GarrageBand. so the price is a bit steep. Wish Apple would let you buy the individual parts.

IMHO, Apple should include iPhoto in the OS updates (not a free download though). Most evryone has a digital cam and needs to manage there pics, the other parts of iLife are a bit more specialist (not evryone has a DV cam and takes vids of most evry leasure outing or are some sort of budding musician).

I skipped iLife 04 and don't feel bad about that. I like the update to iPhoto in iLife 05 but I realize I won't much use any of the other apps so it seems a bit high cost.

Maybe the trick is to wait and get Tiger and iLife 05 with a new Mac mini later this yr.

That is what I am doing... waiting until Tiger is out and then get a Mac Mini.

Although, its a bit hard to resist getting iLife '05, since I do use all iLife apps accept GB -- I really suck at making music -- but since I will be getting a new Mac, I can wait for Tiger to be out and then buy the Mac.

I use iPhoto regularly. I use iDVD (rarely) for photo slideshows. Don't use iMovie at all. I play with GarageBand casually for an hour once every blue moon.

But... I bought it (at EDU price). I'm a sucker.

Oh well.

Does iPhoto 5 actually say FASTER though?

I find 4 fine on my Dual G5 but everything does really.

not with Tiger huh?

mmmmmm I may have to get it. I use everything BUT gargeband (and I'm a musician).

The HD stuff means nothing to me cause I dont have a $3500 camera but in a few years we'll all have to use it.

Yeah, the HD part is not relevant to me at the moment, but I really welcomed the news that the new iMovie will (also) support standard def 16x9. Shot many, many hours from past summer High Sierra Camps at Yosemite in wide. Had plans to move to FCE (or FCP $$$) to begin work on that vid project. Now *it seems* I won't have to.

All I need is iPhoto (I'm still running iPhoto 2.0 for christ's sake). I don't need iMovie, I don't need iDVD (my iBook doesn't even have a Combo Drive), I definitely don't need Garageband, and iTunes is free. Com'n Apple, let me buy iPhoto separately!

I'm not getting it, but then I don't use any of the apps. Only used iPhoto regularly out of iLife 04, and I've moved to iView, which is a much better app IMO. Hopefully they'll include hierarchical albums in the non-pro version now that iPhoto has them. If they do, that seems like the best route to go for someone who only needs photo organization software.

I may get iWork though. I like the idea of Pages, but don't have much of a real use for Keynote.

iPhoto's support for RAW is enough for me to warrant the purchase. I like being able to show the slideshows to family members through iPhoto, but it is a pain to have to convert the pics I have stored RAW.

Yeah, iPhoto's support of my D70's RAW images is a definite plus. iMovie HD is something to brag about, i guess, but the cheapest HDV cams are still ~$3500. Who's gonna plunk down that kind of cash for a camera and then use a free editor like iMovie? I also like the idea of being able to use iDVD on my (non-SuperDrive-equipped) PowerBook and saving it as a disk image to burn on my (DVD-RW-equipped) PC. GarageBand is fun to play around with, but I don't do any serious recording or anything to warrant the new features.

At $200, iView Media Pro isn't exactly competitive with iPhoto price-wise. However, if all someone uses is iPhoto, iView Media is a cheaper alternative at $50.

I've already purchased iLife '05. iPhoto gets the most use (after iTunes, of course), but I use iMovie and iDVD enough. I've played with GarageBand a little, but I'll use it more now that it has notation.

I use all the iLife apps quite a bit. I'm getting iLife 05 for several reasons.
1) 16:9 aspect for iMovie. I've got a wide-screen TV and this will come in handy
2) Customizable slide shows in iPhoto. I hated using iMovie to create good slide shows for iDVD projects. This seems more intuitive
3) Garageband 2 improvements alone are worth the price (especially edu pricing)
4) iPhoto 5 is much improved. I end up using Photoshop quite a lot for photo editing. This will decrease significantly with iPhoto 5. Also it looks like they have a better implementation for keywords.
5) Any performance enhancements to iDVD and iMovie are welcome. Those two are a bit sluggish on a 1.5ghz PB with 1gb of RAM and 128MB of VRAM

Anyone know if iPhoto 5 has lossless JPEG rotation? I've been beating the drum on that one for a couple of years. All the competition does it.

I've thought about buying it, but I wanted to know whether any of them will take advantage of Tiger-only features, or if this is more for Panther. If the latter, will we have to wait until Macworld '06 for a Tiger-centric version of iLife? I mean, the price is pretty steep after all, and I really only use iTunes, iPhoto, and might start using iMovie (very lightly), so if the steeper price isn't for anything superb and long-lasting, then I'll probably forgo it.

I would hope that at least iPhoto, iMovie, and iDVD would be receiving updates after Tiger comes out (free updates through SU) that would enable some of the CoreImage/Video stuff... heck, maybe even iTunes (visualizer)...although, being free, iTunes doesn't count much towards the purchase.

iPhoto 5 sounds awesome. I use iPhoto to deal with photos from my compact cam and JPEGs from my PowerShot G3, but I'd rather shoot in RAW, and have hundreds of RAW photos that I barely look at because I don't have an easy way to organize 'em. So I kinda want to buy iLife '05 just for that.

Only reservations: my PowerShot G3 isn't on the list of supported cams for RAW, so I'll have to ask around after the 22nd to see if anyone's gotten one to work with iPhoto. Also, I might get a new Mac after Tiger comes out, so maybe I'll hold off and get iLife bundled. But I mightn't be able to make myself wait..

I ordered my copy of iL05 last week, along with iWork. I use all of the iLife apps save Garage Band. I'll take a closer look at it when it arrives. Pretty psyched about iWork too, although more for the "Keynote for $20 off plus this great word processor/page layout app for free" reason. OTOH, maybe I'll be doing more with Pages than I have with Word, which I never really warmed up to.

CI and CV are essentially what's needed for Motion brought to the OS level. So I imagine iLife 05 can have those parts already. I imagine with Tiger we'll just see them rely on the OS instead of their own internal stuff... or something... who knows.

But yah I should hope iPhoto and iMovie would use CI and CV respectively. That said. I think I'll buy a Mac mini for my mom and use the copy of iLife that comes with it. I don't really NEED it right now, and am planning on buying the mini probably while still in college. This way I'll save myself like two hundred bucks CND. That said I will be buying iWork very quickly me thinks. Though I might bite the bullet and buy iLife early... it does look sweet. But I'll probably get it once Tiger's out.

I ordered iLife '05 along with iWork '05. I only use iPhoto, iTunes and occassionally iMovie but the enhancements warrant the cost of updating IMO.

When I'm done I can store them on my iPod Shuffle 1gig LOL.
