I use a Mac Mini hooked up to a Sony 21" CRT. The dimness is completely obvious when I screen switch from Mini to PC.

If I buy a DVI LCD screen, will that kill the dimness issue? I want it on its own dedicated screen anyhow instead of sharing with my PC...

I want to keep the mini, but I don't want to live with the dim thing...

This is a dumb question, but have you tried turning up the Brightness under displays in the system preferences?

I'm sure a DVI monitor would help, as they communicate digitally with the monitor instead of the monitor having to calculate the dot phase and pixel alignment. I don't know what kind of effect this would have on the brightness of the monitor, though - but it DEFINITELY makes a difference. I was very underwhelmed running my external monitor at VGA, and when I got the DVI converter I was 100% happy.

With that in mind, the Mini is small enough to take along to a computer store and plug it in to a few different monitors to see if you're happy with the brightness of them. That's exactly what I did when I bought an external display for my powerbook. Just choose the place with the best prices first, so you don't stuff a business when you're not going to buy from them.

Whatever it is, it's for real. I've totally messed with the monitor and messed with all the Apple monitor calibration stuff... when I'm using my PC... and I switch the montor to the Mini... it's not even close in overall luminance. There is no true or bright white...

Plus, I've had trouble doing stuff like web graphics, since it gives me a skewed brightness.

I guess what I'm asking is, myth or no myth, for real my Mini is dim when using a VGA connection. Will a DVI LCD monitor basically cure this?

Anyone had experience with the switch? I have no problem buying the monitor.

I say go to the computer store and try it out... it's the only way you'll know for sure. If it's still too dimm, give your mini to me.
