That's why I stopped reading that site. I've emailed them a couple times regarding their stupid comment system and got no feedback. And they've always done this type of crap where they post complete BS rumours that can't possibly be true. Their lame photoshops with the big red text bubbles are horribly not funny. It does seem unprecedented, particularly by Apple. Apple who always waits till the last second, and always does small drops of $50 or maybe $100. I can't imagine any other smart phone manufacturer doing such a large price drop in so short a time.

I wonder if this was the plan all along.

They need to do something with the few extra spaces on the iPhone main menu. I'm guessing iChat is just a matter of time.

The Apple Store is still down, but the new iPods are up on the main page, and I'm watching the Touch video. The guy pronounces "button" "buddon" and it's pissing me off.

Never. But that's not the point. It's not too soon. It's actually a bit late. The iPhone should've never been $600 in the first place if they could afford to sell it for $400 just 2 months down the road.

There are going to be a lot of bitter people out there, but there will be even more that say, "YES! I'm so glad I waited!"

I would guess you would not see Mail on the iTouch because you cannot have access to it all the time (i.e. no edge network). But you are also correct about having too much overlap would stop everyone from buying an iPhone.

Also, what about email, stock ticker, google maps, notes, etc... I can't figure out why they aren't included considering it has Wi-Fi.

I imagne the Touch will be hacked fairly fast, though, and I also think porting over iPhone apps probably won't be too big a deal when such a thing finally occurs.

Looking at AAPL still dropping, there are two schools of thought

1) The iPhone sold so poorly, Apple had to cut prices to keep demand up
2) The iPhone was overpriced in the first place because they could get almost any price from early adopters, now bringing it to a reasonable price.

Which do you think is true ?

I bet my money (just bought AAPL) on #2, because I don't think Apple just cust prices to keep up demand. It's unlike them. I think they planned this all along.
And IMO, at $ 400, NO other smart phone supplier can compete. It's a whole new game.

IMHO, there are still a very clear number of reasons to buy an iPhone.

Also, I wish the mail application was included so that I didn't need to take my laptop while on short business trips.

I'm guessing it will eventually be hacked.

I was hoping for a standard 30gb+. Obviously the price of flash memory isn't at the point to offer high capacities at $300-400.

You are right on the email etc. The only reason I could see for not including these apps is competition with iPhone. But if people have the access with wifi, they will find a way to get those apps. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple made those apps available later on. It just seems foolish to have wifi, a web browser, but no email client.

I'm wondering how long it will be until the capacities for touch model get bumped. I would assume the next upgrade would make the 16gb the low end.

For those of you that have used both iPhone and classic ipods/nanos, is the touch interface that much better? My wife has a 4gb nano, but I was thinking of getting some type of iPod to use in the car and at work. Is the touch screen harder to use in the car because it doesn't have the click wheel? I like the wifi feature of the touch model and as much as I was hoping for more space, my library doesn't even fill up the 4gb nano so space probably isn't much of a concern for me.

The iPhone dropped $200 in 68 days.

That $2.94 a day to be an early adopter. Ouch.

Great post.

I would say that it's a bit of a combination of things. 4GB for an iPhone was never a good deal IMHO. Far too expensive for far too little space for music... let alone videos. It was clear that most people were going for the 8GB model. That caused the second problem... $599 was a BIG pill to swallow.

The price of the iPhone is now nearly 2/3 as much as it was yesterday. I feel $500 would have been the magic number, but $399 makes it 10x more attractive. I payed $200 for my last phone and it wasn't even a smart phone.

IMHO, Apple brought me back into thinking I can buy an iPhone.

I don't think it's either. AAPL *always* drops after an announcement. Buy on the rumor, sell on the news. It's been SOP for AAPL for a while now.

That's for traders, not for investors.

For more long-term oriented people, Apple just got more attractive, IMO. There were worries if Apple could really sell all those iPhone sthey hoped they would. Now they will.

Yes, at a lower margin, but here is the great thing: it's again about convergence, selling songs and movies on the iTunes Store. And luring people to buy a Mac.

The problem that other smart phone manufacturers have is that they not only have to compete with Apple's prices (driven by huge purchasing volumes of raw materials), but also don't have any *additional* sales potential from content or computers.

IMHO, I think it has more to do with the fact that it's only been 62 days since the release. People will always complain about such things, but usually Apple's a little slower to introduce such abrupt changes.

DON'T get me wrong, this is exactly how I see Apple dominating the smart phone market.

The iPod Touch looks really great. But since it is Wi-Fi enabled is there any reason why it's missing the Google Maps and Weather widgets?

Without these widgets and the Email app it's not quite an iPhone w/o the phone. Also, can the Contacts and Calendar info be updated since there is a keyboard now?

I see two things, may or may not be important/pertinent/true:

1) Apple just dropped the iPhone price saying to any of those folks who wanted to buy it and unlock it for use on another carrier "Here guys, come and get it."

2) Class Action Lawsuit started by someone who paid $599.
2008 iMac 3.06 Ghz, 2GB Memory, GeForce 8800, 500GB HD, SuperDrive
8gb iPhone on Tmobile

I should start one. As we all know only the person who starts it and the lawyers make money off those things. Everyone else will get a $10.00 iTunes gift card. :-)
