i have the old 20 gig ipod..and lately whenever i plug it into my ibook to update songs i may have loaded onto itunes nothing happens. the ipod makes a whirring noise and i get the checkmark on the screen saying ok to disconnect..but the ipod never shows up on the itunes screen..and the menu option to update is grayed out...i even tried to update the sotware again with version 1.3..but it told me to attach an ipod to my computer..even after i did..i couldnt update it since it seemed like the ibook didnt recognize an ipod was attached to it....i have done a reset on the ipod but it hasnt helped..any help would be appreciated..thanks

This happend to me yesterday and it was the dumbest thing. I reset the iPod several times, restarted the computer, tried reinstalling the iPod software (of course didn't work). Finally I humbly checked all my connections and...the CD burner into which the iPod dock FireWire cable was connected had come unplugged.

So at the risk of insulting you, first make sure that everything is plugged in, not just your FireWire cables but also any FireWire peripherals in the chain.

If that simple solution doesn't work, I've had luck in this situation before by deleting the file

homedirectory/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPod.plist

and restarting the computer.

Good luck!
