Here Comes Nexus 7 Nightmare: The iPad mini - Bloomberg

Apple Inc. (AAPL) plans to debut a smaller, cheaper iPad by year-end, two people with knowledge of the plans said, to help maintain dominance of the tablet market as Google Inc. (GOOG) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) prepare competing handheld devices.

The new model will have a screen that’s 7 inches to 8 inches diagonally, less than the current 9.7-inch version, said the people, who asked not to be identified because Apple hasn’t made its plans public. The product, which Apple may announce by October, won’t have the high-definition screen featured on the iPad that was released in March, one of the people said.

While I am somewhat skeptical of the above report, I do think a 7-8" iPad mini is inevitable. It's just a matter of when.

In the meantime, I'm looking to get a 7" Android Jelly Bean 4.1 machine. It's likely not going to be a Nexus 7 though, since I'd prefer something with a microSD port and either NTFS or exFAT support, or both.

I think the market can support a 7" iPad, but I doubt it wouldn't have retina display since everything is moving that way.

I'm interested to see the price point. If it's not $199, it's going to have a hell of a time competing with the Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet, along with the other good Android tablets on the market (Vizio makes a nice one, as does Asus).
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

Personally I think it'd sell fine at $299 for the WiFi-only model. 4G LTE model would be higher cost.

Honestly I'd probably buy a smaller iPad as my next model until they put in a Wacom style digitizer. Ten inches is honestly kinda big for a lot of things. I'd also love to see them shrink the bezel. I was trying to play a game the other day and it hurt my thumbs constantly reaching for the on screen controls. If they did I'd probably leave my current iPad bed side and put the smaller one in the living room.
