Anyone know of anything similar to this for Mac OS X? I searched googled half-assedly for about ten minutes and couldn't find anything.

It seems to be some sort of audio app, but what does it do specifically? Is it a format converter?

No. It gives you very detailed info for any video or audio file you open with it.
GSpot v2.60 Screenshot - Main Dialog
That screenshot should explain it pretty well. It's VERY useful when trying to find a codec for a movie you have but have no idea where to start.

Well I'm assuming you have some odd movie you want to play but don't know the codec. If you don't use it already I recommend you check out VLC. If VLC wont play a file, then chances are you are out of luck.
Also VLC, even if i t cant play a file, has an info window that will give you information on which codec was used etc (which is what you want i guess)

I have VLC. I don't actually have a specific movie I want to know info about. I might add, that until recently, VLC didn't support WMV, and it still doesn't support real yet, so there are quite a few things I could use gSpot for.

gspot does far more than VLC in terms of identifying the contents of a media file... unfortunately I haven't seen an app for any other platform that is as capable as gsplot.

You should always commit your full ass to a search. If I spent that much time looking for gspot my gf would probably fall asleep.

I know it's been a long time since this question was asked, but this seems to be the answer to your problem:
MediaInfo
Although their own OS X version is not ready yet, they link to two versions that do.

Gustaf
