Just installed 10.5 last night and the fan on my MBP is definitely going on much more than with 10.4.x. It's started with the original spotlight indexing activity and then for some apps (e.g., video ichat...which never caused the fan to go much over 2000 rpm, now makes it quickly go up to 5K, which makes conversation difficult.....very annoying.... )

Anyone else experiencing excessive fan behavior on their laptops?

I have the same setup, but so far have not noticed any change in fan behaviour.

I have definitely noticed my MBP running hotter under 10.5 than Tiger. Even with the lid closed, something is periodically spinning - either the fans or the HD.

Regardless of Tiger or Leopard, the MBP's fans are always on. They run at 2000 rpm minimum. A tool like iStat Pro will tell you what speed they're currently running at.

Thx, I know about and use istat, And u r correct, the fans are constantly running (nominally around 2000 rpm). But upon installation of 10.5, fan activity has increased quite a bit.

Not here it hasn't. Have you checked what kind of processes are running in the background and possibly causing CPU load?

This happened to me as well. I had my macbook in my lap so I set it on a table and waited. It didn't go down so I closed the lid, after about a minute it quieted down. It did it again later that night but I set it down and waited and it calmed down after a bit.

Hasn't down it since though.

Since my initial issues with the high fan speeds, things have been pretty quiet so far....(fingers crossed). As for running processes, the only process that shows up has using >50% cpu is Finder itself. A relaunch of Finder not only reduces the cpu but also brings the fan back down. Had to do this a couple of times.

My next ichat session will also reveal a lot b/c the when I first tried ichat following 10.5 installation the fan was so loud, it became unbearable to chat.....

Yeah, with a single process using >50% CPU some fan activity can be expected.

hmm... I have about the same setup as the poster. Running iChat, iTunes, Safari, mail, and torrenting to an external. According to iStat Pro (love iStat) I'm running at 2,000. This is with my computer on a stand a few CM above my desk.

My MBP rarely even spins up to 2000rpms under average internet use. And it rarely gets over 55C with light use (ichat, mail, safari, itunes, azureus). I use smcFanControl to keep the fans spinning at a speed I want, although most of the time they are set at stock apple settings. I'm in tiger however. But you may want to try smcFanControl in leopard anyways.

I've noticed my MBP (2.33 GHZ C2D 3GB Ram) getting hotter as well. I've installed coolbook, which helps a lot. It does take some time to figure out the most optimized setting, but the time spent is well worth it.

Another thing I've noticed is that Leopard drains the battery much faster than Tiger. Annoying to say the least.

Sounds like Tiger redux (known for making iBooks and PowerBooks run hotter than they had under Panther). Eye candy and features don't come for free...

final update for me on this subject.

Things are running much quieter now. fan rarely get above 3K (and that was during a video ichat session). So maybe my issues were ultimately related to spotlight indexing and such.

Yep, that's probably what happened. I have seen zero evidence up to now that running everyday stuff in Leopard causes any more heat or fan noise than Tiger. What I do know though is that my CPU is being used quite a bit less to do GUI operations in Leopard.
