i read that this is supposed to happen by default with macbook pro. i just got a new one, running 10.5.7 but when my mouse is plugged in, the trackpad is still active. i tried this terminal command: defaults write -g com.apple.mouse.ignoreTrackpadIfMousePresent 1 - but it didn't work. any suggestions?

I can't find it either - 10.5.8. I'm sure it used to exist.

It was there in the old preference. When the introduced the multitouch prefpane they must have deleted it. :/

It's there on my MBP at the very bottom of the Trackpad preferences: "Ignore trackpad when mouse is present"

This preference setting no longer exists with the unibodies, as Apple wants you to be able to use trackpad gestures even when a mouse is attached.
