Zoologger: The mud creature that lives without oxygen - life - 07 April 2010 - New Scientist

Wow. This opens up soooo many doors for exobiology. This increases the chances of finding extraterrestrial life by an unimaginable amount. We now have conclusive evidence that oxygen is not required for the development of complex organisms.

Yeah, headline could be clearer. It's the first multicellular organism that doesn't require oxygen.

Cute find, but I wouldn't be holding my breath
I could take Sean Connery in a fight... I could definitely take him.

There are plenty of viruses (arguably not life) and bacteria that don't require oxygen, but this is an advanced, multicellular organism.

No it doesn't. The chances have always been infinitely probable.
See, this "universe" thing is quite a big place. Really big. You just won't believe how vastly hugely mindbogglingly big it is. I mean you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist, but that's just peanuts to the size of the universe, etc., etc..
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.

I would go as far as to say that the universe is annoyingly big. Visit other stars is a long drive.

I hated the new movie. They had to wait for Adams to die before they could make it because he refused to sign off on that godawful screenplay.

I've no idea whether I hate it or not, since I refuse to watch it.

Big fan of the books, obviously, and the BBC radio drama.

I've been experimenting with this for a while.

Just for the record... bugs, mice, dogs, cub scouts, hookers, ex-wives... none can survive without oxygen.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

So then it's the first eukaryote to survive without oxygen?

What are those extremophiles 5 miles underground living INSIDE rocks all about then? They are pretty impressive also.

I didn't think we'd been down that far yet? I thought we were still stuck at a couple of miles?

Actually I know it is at least 3.9k but if it is 100 feet or 10 miles it is just as amazing that there can be life INSIDE Of a rock deep underground happily living away.

Eukaryotes aren’t necessarily multicellular. And no, it’s not the first anaerobic eukaryote – certain yeasts, for example, are eukaryotic and can survive without oxygen.

Somebody call Samus!

I'm pretty sure it feeds off brain matter.

Bush Tax Cuts == Job Killer
June 2001: 132,047,000 employed
June 2003: 129,839,000 employed
2.21 million jobs were LOST after 2 years of Bush Tax Cuts.
