OK, I watched it and... holy crap! Sooooo amazingly awesomely good I can barely believe it. I was really worried the new Doctor might not be great, the new side kick might not be great, the new writers might not be great, but oh... my... freaking... WOW!
It's like the series just keeps getting better! The everything was brilliant, and the cinematography was... wow! The tone just felt so much more deep!

Was a good start, and it did well to build up a new story from nothing, as the link to Rose, Martha, Capt. Jack etc went with Tennant's 'farewell tour' at the end of the last one. Some good one liners too… "you're Scottish, fry something!" .

Yah agreed since the last bit basically wrapped up eeeeeverything in a lot of ways going into this one felt a lot like Doctor Who was already over and cancelled but now I'm super stoked for the new series! The fry something comment was weird and cute, but all in all probably one of the best ways he's gotten a companion that they've done yet!
To be honest I didn't really enjoy most of the specials last year Christmas and new years were good, but the new doctor, planet of the dead and waters of mars all felt like they were missing something. I think part of that was the doctor having a new companion. All in all I'm still giddy prolly gonna re watch tonight.

My only problem with the show was "the letter zero." Is this a British thing?

Hmmm I never noticed that... could just be a Timelord thing...
In other news did anyone note the "Eleventh Hour," title? It took me a while to make the connection between the Eleventh Doctor, and the Episode the Eleventh Hour.

That I got.
Hopefully Dr. 11 will get to step into the wardrobe room and get pants and jacket that fit. He can keep the suspenders and bow tie if that's his thing though. Anyone else get a "Conan O'Brien's younger brunette brother" vibe? Must be the gangly and the goofy, combined with rooster hair.
I liked him with the young Amy, and for a moment thought they were going to do a kid companion again.

Today I started watching Dr. Who Series 1 (2005) for the first time. I'm hooked. So far, I think it may be my favorite UK drama.

I love the new Tardis interior, the old one always looked like it was made out of yellow foam.
I'm learning to truly love Amy Pond, though to be honest I think she's a bit too sexy for doctor who. Like Rose was hot but also not like insanely skinny, Martha was gorgeous but at the same time well she had hips, Amy's a bit super skinny... though then again so's the new Doctor...
Anyway, third episode was brilliant, though two episodes where the Doctor has to choose between something and humanity is a bit much. Thankfully next week I doubt the Angels are gonna be holding all of humanity hostage.
Anyone wanna take a stab at what those cracks might mean? I'm guessing it was caused when Galifrey was pulled through. Either that or maybe the Trickster?

Whatever the cracks mean, it's affected the doctor or everyone but the doctor. So something has shifted. It's also a difference between this and previous series that they are making the 'crack' more obvious as a connection, compared to previous ones that you really had to look for. spoiler tag for Big Mac as he's watching from the Eccleston series now.

Yah series one and three were both really subtle with their things. Or the Face of Bo, that ran as a constant hint for three years! I'm glad they're bringing River Song back though, because I was a bit worried they were doing a LOT of retcon. Makes me wonder if nobody remembers the Daleks, what's happened to Micky, Martha, Gwen, Jack, and Donna?

urk. Episode 3 was disappointing.
waving a cookie at a dalek for ten minutes, even to make a tea joke, not clever enough. I'd presume Daleks to have enough scanning abilities to tell a cookie from tech. Perhaps Tennant could have pulled it off, but I blame the writing of this ep. Lame all around.

He said, "No scanning!" so they couldn't tell it was a cookie. Still, I don't feel the same chemistry between the Doctor and his assistant as I did with the previous Doctors.

Third episode was disappointing considering it was Daleks and SPITFIRES IN SPACE WITH FRICKIN LAZERS!!!! which should have been amazing.
Episode 4 is a lot better

I don't think it's a coincidence that episode 3 is the only non-Moffat episode so far. Episode 4 was EPIC.

Apart from the huge animated banner ad for Graham Norton's foul "Over the rainbow camp fest that the BBC plastered all over the screen just as matt Smith emoted his way to a climax.
Completely blew the suspense. BBC well rapped over the knuckles for that back here in the UK

On the whole though, yes ep. 4 was epic who. Best of the new series by a huge margin and up there with Family of Blood in my mind.

I liked Episode 3 and I think it was pretty standard Dalek stuff, I don't think the point was that it would be an epic show down, but rather that we now know the Daleks are going to be back and this Doctor will face them too.
Episode 4 is sooo cute, I love River Song, and her chemistry with the Doctor is brilliant. I especially like the bit about her being sure he'd find the box some day.

So is Pond a lesbian? She gave a smile to that uniformed girl, then had that thing about loving someone you're not supposed to. Or do you think she was talking about the Doctor?

Oh, she was definitely talking about the doctor, looked right in his eyes, and if they go the Rose route I will be peeved. Especially since her crush started as a child it would be skeevy.
Database ate my long post, but basically re ep3 I expect better writing. It didn't have to be epic but it could have been a lot more clever and/or mysterious.
Lastly, new Daleks look like iPod Nanos.

I keep seeing them every time one of these is driving towards me. Not sure why, just very similar design cues I guess.

oooh hooo episode four is a doozy and for once the second part of an two parter (episode 5) lives up to the first one (mostly).
Some excellent one liners, more tension than most children watching will be able to bear and one of who's greatest ever death scenes.
"Respect the thing". Indeed

Angel Bob was good. Reminded me a bit of the animated dead from the Library though.
The angels otherwise weren't as scary as first time around for some reason.
I am intrigued by what's going on with River Song.
Steps up from the Dalek ep, but not quite there yet for me. Doctor still too shouty, needs more clever. He had a good line about being trapped though. Some steel showing through.

The vampires in venice one was OK, but it was a lil weird. Anyone miss the days before Doctor Who got big into effects? I kinda miss the days when you looked at a Slythine and were like wow that's pretty funny... now it's like... Oh great... it's a really creepy looking three D fishy thing...

Superb dialogue from Matt Smith though. He's such a great actor. I love watching what he's doing with his hands as the talks. Also big props to Rory who was excellent. Karen Gillian is beginning to grate as Amy. Not enough depth going on at all.

That's nice of them. Do they usually charge for free content?

BBC America isn't part of the basic subscription package. You have to spend more for a higher tier of programs to get it. So, it's nice that they make some programs available for free for cheapskates like me.

Perhaps they know we'll get it elsewhere, without their commercials, if they don't?
But I do like it better on demand.

Is BBC America available in HD anywhere? It's one of the channels that isn't HD in my package, and that saddens me...
On the other hand, at least I get it. I wish I had had the time yesterday to watch, or today to find online, the first episode of the new season. I will catch it somewhere, but I'm not sure where.

Yeah, it kind of blows - I read that BBC America HD is a Time Warner Cable exclusive. I dumped Time Warner because U-Verse was a much more compelling deal, but it's annoying only to have the SD channel. But hey, if that were the only thing we had to complain about we'd all be really well off, right?
The premier was quite strong. This season shows a lot of promise.
