Hi everyone!

Today I received my new rev. C powerbook 17" and so far so good!

Its just a stock basic 17" with no upgraded components.

Positives:
1) The screen is awesome, there is no need for an external monitor when using it a home since the lcd is more than plenty.
2) So far everything is running smoothly, no hiccups.
3) Did all the apple updates with no problem!
4) Great packaging, and build quality so far... no pixel problems yet! (whew)

Negatives:
1) Price..... ouch! after the PB, airport xpress, laptop bag, usb hub, mouse... the price is high.
2) Not as fast as my dual 2.0 G5
3) Size and weight... its just a tiny bit on the heavy and large size..

Here are some pics... wow this screen size is awesome!

w00t!

I got my 17 last week and love it. And I got a great deal. I was in the market for a 15 but they're out of stock so the dealer sold me the 17 for the same price as a 15 and AppleCare was still free as a promotion was going on.
PiXelCheck is a great freeware app for checking pixels. I haven't had any flaws on mine either, thankfully.
Migration was a cinch, just hooked it up to my external FW drive and it did all of the work (had used CCC on my old iBook G4).
Using 2 512s of ram but would like to get a 1GB stick later in the year.
One question, is your trackpad clicker sticky at all? Mine has been very firm. It seems to be loosening up some.

Enjoy.

you know when you said its regrets about weight and size. Think about it its that big 'cause of the screen and its only one inch thick also it isn't that heavy really.

I thought my 17" would be too big, but then I realized - where can you go w/ a 15 that you can't go with a 17"?

Nowhere! VIVA LA BIG SCREEN!

And 15" don't get people going "oh my...thats a beautiiful screen"

Whenever my friend carried his 17" PB around, we used to ask him if he was on his way to the beach for some wakeboarding. Lame, I know, but the 17" is huge!

I just got my 12" - but you'd have to be crazy not to admit that the 17" is absolutely gorgeous! congrats!

Congrats on your new toy. Since you already have a dual G5 I won't recommend any new software. But don't be dissappointed if the lid leaves marks on the edge of the handrest. You can get felt feet from home depot like I did, or cushions from Radtech:

homepage.mac.com/bhardy3/PhotoAlbum34.html

or just use the plastic screen protector that came with the laptop out of the box. It's a very small nitpik about such an awsome machine but it does happen to some users. The 17" is the coolest running and quietest Powerbook I have ever owned. If you are not already hooked on Garageband give it a try. You don't have to know anything about music to toy with it.

so the 17" doesn't come with rubber pads in the top corners of the lid like the 12"?

another reason the 12" is the superior powerbook!

I rec'd my 17" several months ago and then rec'd another...and then another...and finally the 4th time was the charm to a perfect new laptop (so far).

1) They shipped the order standard even though I'd modified the stock model.

2) The first replacement shipped with the wrong hard drive though everything else was as ordered.

3) The second replacement shipped with a broken right shift-key.

4) The third replacement (some three weeks after arrival of the initial 17") arrived as it should have--fully functional and correctly built-to-order.

While I don't remember the exact date of my order I did receive it within two-weeks of Apple's announcement. I have to give kudos to the most part to Apple for trying to make the situation right with the exception of one tech (wish I knew his name). He went on and on about how my broken shift-key wasn't covered under warranty...it wasn't covered under the applecare plan I purchased and I would have to pay x-amount of dollars to have it repaired. It was only when I stressed I would sooner return it and go buy a Dell that he took two-steps back and acted professional. BS, in my book but since then things have been great.

I've had a few hard-freezes with no easily identifiable cause but I'm not complaining. For me it was a step up from a 15.2" TiBook and I couldn't be happier. What is crazy for me...is going back to the TiBook after using this monster. It seems so tiny...

Lastly, I've tried the 17" inch in 3 different backpacks made to hold the 15" TiBook and they all, just barely, have had enough room to hold the 17". These include, Kensington, The North Face, and Booq.

I've had my 1.33 since November of last year, I had a bad motherboard (RAM in second slot wasn't recognized) and a nightmare dealing with Apple (sent back twice, they slightly bent the case above the latch button, screen hinges feel like they are getting loose {they ARE loose}) BUT BUT BUT I am still wickedly happy with the machine, it is quite simply the best laptop on the market, nuff said. You will love it.
15", can't touch this…
enjoy

Apple is one of the few companies where people actually show off the packaging. (I think porn videos are the other...)

Oh! I'm over at my friend Ming's house as I type this -- he's just gotten back from New York, and with him returned a happenin' 14" iBook G4. I myself am an owner of a 1.33GHz 17" Powerbook G4, and I'm starting to have second thoughts about it. It's friggin' huge, for one: although it makes for a stylish desktop replacement, it just isn't isn't practical to bring it to, say, a family BBQ or a long subway ride.

Which, incidentally, brings me to my next insecurity: the Powerbook G4 has an intimidatingly 'professional' air to it. I feel like I should be wearing a overly-tight business suit and an angry scowl whenever I lift the cover.

Finally, the aluminium scratches and dents like mad. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I'm about as far away from a young urban professional as one can get*, but I'm ridiculously accident-prone and my laptop has its fair share of battle scars from everything from nail polish spills to violent drops. (Fortunately, safeware.com's great for that sort of thing.)

What do you think?

Congrats on the new 17-inchers. Wow. I have a 3+year old rev. a tibook G4 400. Amazing, but NEVER had a problem with it. But now it's slooooowwwww and I need to upgrade. The fact that I haven't for 3 years is incredible; I can't stand when new things come out and I don't have them. But alas, no G5 and no new powerbook.

Someone at my office might be buying it for $750, but I'm not sure. If that falls thru and you know anyone interested, I may be selling.

Good luck with it. And thanks for those pics. Nice. Real nice.

12 ... loving it ... slightly jealous about the real estate on a 17 =P .. But I cherish the portability of this thing ... I dont see myself ever having a larger than 12inch machine .... unless life demanded it ..

I'm currently working in Singapore. A good number of PowerBook 15s have either been sold or shipped to Australia to meet demand there.
If I had seen a 12 with the 80GB SuperDrive, I may have opted for it, but a 17 at 15 prices (with AppleCare) was too good to pass up, especially now that I don't need an external monitor.
Down the road, I'll probably get a G5 when they go to 3Ghz and then sell the 17 for the smallest G5PB on offer.
