Sent my grandparents over to England for a vacation. On day 1, my grandfather breaks a rib and develops some other lung issues. Bottom line of that is that he's not allowed to fly for 6-8 weeks. I need to get them back to the States (preferably Florida, but anywhere is fine). I've looked into cruises, but the soonest they leave is Sep 15th, and they take 10 days on top of that. Are there any other options for traveling from England to the US?

Contact commercial shipping companies. Many offer passenger cabins as well.
They won't go much faster than a cruise ship, obviously, but are more affordable and frequent.

That's the best bet, but wouldn't it be better to stay in the UK and wait till he can fly, than be stuck aboard a cargo vessel for 25 days with poor medical facilities?
Good luck, and let us know how it works out.

Here's the options:
Fly.
Cruise ship.
Commercial ship (as per analog's suggestion).
Buy a boat.
Swim.
Dig a tunnel.
Invented a Trek-style transporter pod. Watch out for flies.
That's it really.

Can't he just move to France and retire there?

Well, that is not good. If he is older with a lung problem he could literally die on a cargo ship with no way to get off. A cruise ship would at least have doctor who might offer a fighting chance against the potential of pneumonia. Best of luck getting this figured out!

Is it THAT important they get back fast? Maybe he should just stay there and recover.
And why not fly for 6-8 WEEKS? The stress of takeoff? Cabin air? Why not 2 weeks? Or 4?

The best thing, imo, at this point is to contact his insurance provider or your insurance broker and see what they advise. Most insurance carriers are covered for emergency procedures in foreign countries and if a doctor in London says he can't fly and needs medical attention ASAP - they should be able to cover the expenses.
I think the safest bet is for him to get medical attention in London and to recover there as well. Sure, it may be very expensive that way, but you can't risk additional injury or poor medical conditions with your other options.
Another thing you can do is to contact the US Embassy in London. They've probably come across a few situations like yours and may be able to guide you in the right direction.
Good luck! I hope for a safe recovery.

Get medical treatment in England first. Take a cruise ship home. Get a ship with onboard medical facility. Your health insurance company should honor all the costs when you all return home.

He wont have to pay for medical in the UK, loads of people come to the UK to leech off our State supplied services and never pay for it, one more wont make a difference. [/random rant over]
I hope your grandparents get well soon!

Wrong time of year, though a trucking company once did that as a publicity stunt. Drive around the world, from Europe to New York the long way.
The idea is possible with modifications. Take a train to Siberia, boat across to Alaska, then trains/buses the rest of the way.

Take a Soyuz capsule to orbit, and hitch a ride with the Americans on their shuttle back to the States.

On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by '76 we'll be a. o. k.
Apparently this should have been available 31 years ago.

Trebuchet. He might not land in Florida, but he should make it somewhere on the East Coast. You could just pick him up where ever he lands.

He would have to wait too long though, the ice isn't frozen yet. That happens in about November.

Is that for real? It sounds fascinating. Can you tell us more?
And more importantly, would travel insurance cover it?
I hope the OP bought insurance.

Found a cruise leaving Spain for Florida this Saturday. Price seems somewhat reasonable. Takes a while, but accomplishes the task.

Many carriers now specifically do NOT cover medical problems overseas. Thats exactly why supplemental insurance has become a growing industry.
