I have, cluttering up my daughters' study area, an old (early 1997) Performa 6360. Originally it was for them to use for homework, but they prefer the more modern machines. No suprise there!

So -- my husband wants to throw the old machine out, or get rid of it. I keep thinking there must be SOME useful purpose for it. I have a desktop (400 MZ G4, upgraded to 933 MZ), plus a Rev ! 12-in PB. There's a Windows machine in the house too (I only use it for free cell and hearts. )

Anyway, any options for me?

You could put Linux on it and set it up as a firewall/router/server... otherwise... ummm... you could get rid of it.

just get rid of it. Computers are like other tech. Expensive. After a while, you just have to let go. My dad still has this 17 inch black and white monitor from back in the day. And by black and white, I mean only black and only white. Its totally binary.

He couldn't believe no one would buy it at a garage sale for $200. Its planned obsolescence and unless you can sell it as a collectible just chuck it.

I dug out my old 7200 the other day thinking I could use it for something. Nothing. Probably going to throw it away.

You can get routers/firewalls that are tiny, easy to setup, and use little power for under $20. Even a server would be worth it with all the juice it would eat up, and it doesn't have Ethernet. You could run a server off your main computer.

Donate the turkey! There must be some organisation that could use it, plus it would be a tax write off!

My dad had a 6330 collecting dust in the closet. He uses a G4 and system X. He used to use classic 9 to bring up a cooking program print it out then go to the kitchen cook then throw away the paper. I Pulled the 6330 out wiped the drive installed Sys 8.6 installed the cooking program set it up in start up items and put it right in the kitchen. Now he just fires it up and reads the directions right off the screen. No more cook books and saves paper. He thinks its high tech. But he's happy.

Actually, I think most organizations get flooded with way to much unuseable junk. I had access to about 50 75xx macs a few years ago and could not find any organization that would take them. I tried area churches, Goodwill and others. The problem was that they have licensing issues and have to throw away tons of old systems each year, which costs them money to dispose of in quantity. It is sad but true. If yours has all of its software licenses and CDs (and is running) you may be luckier in the donations.

A rummage sale might not work, but I think that I just have bad experiences for example a few years ago I saw a guy trying to push a color classic for $100 and when I asked what software it had he showed me some window's 3.1 software.
