Just wanted to say that ads that cause Safari to download files (Desktop-X-1, where X is the number of downloads so far) are really stupid and annoying. And for some reason these seem to download to my user folder and not the Desktop like they're supposed to.

No ads on MacNN should download any files. Also, go to Safari > Prefs > general tab to make sure your download location is your desktop.

No, it's definitely the ads. I'm seeing it here, as well as other sites with ads.

Can you post a screenshot of your downloads folder or something? What are the files called?

I already said in the op, Desktop-X-1, where X is the number of times it has been downloaded. I think it's something meant for Windows machines, to set their desktop to some ad.

Just happened 7 times. In 8 views. Here's what it does to my user folder.

I might as well say it before a mod does:

Next time it happens, get the click-through link of the ad and post it here. Then the admins can bug-spray the thing till it dies.

There isn't a visible ad on the page when this happens, as I think the visible part of the ad is supposed to show up on the desktop.

Would this be where the ad is supposed to be in the page source?
[<!-- leaderboard, BEGIN -->

</table>

And why are there no code tags here?

Thinine: have you considered running an ad blocker?

Why should I? Besides, they all suck in some way and break too easily. And it's not as if there's a visible component to these ads anyway, just the script. MacNN gets rid of all sorts of ads with sound or video or boobs. Why not this one?

Unlikely. More likely few people read the feedback forum. Besides, if you're admitting that it's an ad, why not remove it in the first place?

But the people who do read it are on here a LOT!

You're the one "admitting" it is an ad. No one from MacNN has claimed it was an ad.

Logic isn't your strong suit, is it? If he thinks ad blocking software will fix it, he thinks it's an ad.

For now I've taken to blocking the domain the files are downloaded from using OpenDNS.

Perhaps the ad only affects certain forums? I've certainly never seen the nudity or sound ads others have. And I'm not claiming those don't exist either.
