I'll be getting my very first smart phone ever, and it'll be the 4S for $100.

Yar. I'm upgrading, pretty much, for the screen and cpu speed alone. I'll still have my SGSIII, Android irritates me and is as buggy as a brothel bed, but the hardware itself is fantastic. It has the most beautiful display I've ever seen on a mobile device. Also, and I realize this doesn't apply to everyone, but because of my long fingers, it's easier for me to use. I reckon, if I could have iOS6 on the SGSIII, I'd be thrilled.

Are you running 4.0? Cuz 4.1 with the rotation app is where it's at.

Per-ordered!

The Apple Store itself is completely borked, but I was able to use the iPhone Apple Store app to place two orders for phones.

I was going to get up at 6 am and place the orders in the morning, but I just snapped awake at 2am. It was like my body knew what time it was. Weird.

I pre-orded too... Got the "2 week" delivery time. That's fine with me because I won't be here next weekend for a "one week" delivery so it would have sat in the apartment office. 32GB Black/Slate for AT&T

Pre-ordered through Verizon Wireless Website at 7:30 am EST.

Absolutely FLAWLESS process.

Took less than 5 minutes and I even was able to transfer an upgrade from my wife's phone to my phone to use.

P.S. My delivery estimate was Sept. 21.

How'd you manage to do that? It was my understanding that the grandfathered unlimited plans weren't available for the iPhone 5?

It's the opposite.

Frankly, it's the only thing AT&T has over Verizon. If they killed it there'd be a mass exodus.

They were available thru AT&T just fine. This is my third iPhone and it has always transferred over my unlimited plan just fine.

Same here. I had no issues keeping my unlimited data plan through the online Apple Store.

What color and storage did everyone get? Black 64GB (AT&T) right here.

Well that's good. I thought I read somewhere that they were requiring one of those "Shared Data Plans" with the iPhone 5. Which I don't want and don't need because I only have one iOS device that would use a cellular data connection.

You do need a shared data plan to do Facetime over Cellular on AT&T. You can keep your unlimited data, but you won't be able to Facetime.

It's a hot load of crap. A blatant violation of the spirit of net neutrality.

Doesn't the unlimited data plan drop to 2G speeds after some usage? 2G ain't fast enough for facetime.

Unlimited is pointless after 3GB when AT&T drops you to edge speeds. I don't see the value anymore, especially when verizon doesn't block FaceTime, has a huge lte footprint, and will unlock you for international sim cards.

And yes, the skype app isn't a great app. I'm really hoping FaceTime over cellular at least matches Skype's a/v with ft ease of use.

649$ to upgrade until June 13th, then 199$. Bloody holy hell, that's a bunch of moolah. So do I want to wait 9 months? Selling my 4S may get me 245$, still 400$ and I can't give the 4S to my wife. After the initial madness is over I will call Verizon and see what deal I can make, but it seems that both VZ and ATT are pretty hard nosed this time around.

A good solid upgrade from my 4 which is feeling a bit old now, just put a new battery and back glass on it to make it sellable again. Less of an upgrade from the 4S and if I had an S I probably wouldn't. But, I'm out of contract so yes I've pre ordered two, one white one black for me and Mrs DHM. We'll see who ges what colour. I've had black for my 3, 3GS and 4 so I'm feeling the change.

O2 in the UK were pretty funny. It was like, "What iPhone? New iPhone? WHAT! WHERE!! TODAY!! Oh S**t.

Much running around and their pre order site went live about 8.00pm by which time the delivery times were around 18 years. Dolts!

Luckily O2 business were doing stealth pre orders without telling anyone.

I'll be back in the US on the 19th thru Oct 13th. I was intending on just walking into a store and buying an unlocked one. I hope it won't be too difficult.

Hmm.... Just went to the online store and you can't order an unlocked iPhone 5. It has to be tied to a carrier.... that's bizarre.

Did some googling and found out this is standard practice. They don't make unlocked iPhones immediately available. What a pain in the ass.. now I won't be able to get one until December.

Wife just let me know that my iPhone 5 will be delivered on Oct. 5th. I'm upgrading from a flip phone I got for free two years ago. Wife decided that I make enough money and am enough of a cheap ass everywhere else that I can splurge on a phone.

The catch here is that we will be trading in her unlimited data plan for a Share Everything plan. She never uses more than 400MB a month and I'm not in the country enough to use much more than that, so the 2GB plan will be fine for us, plus included tethering means I can use my iPad anywhere I want, too.

The second you start tethering is the second your data usage will shoot up - worth keeping an eye on that. I frequently use my iPhone as a personal hotspot to show work to clients, I can see the resulting spikes in data usage.

Because of the low data usage, right?

I'll have to keep my eye on it, I could upgrade to 4GB for an extra $10/month. I suppose total usage will vary widely depending on me, if I'm out of the country for 3 weeks/month like I have been lately the phone will spend most of its time powered down.

Yeah same here, esp. if I'm tethering a laptop for a few days on a business trip. My normal usage is about 300-400 MB a month, but if I tether for several days, it might jump to 1-1.5 GB. And that's partially because of the limitations of 3G in some areas, and my specifically avoiding Netflix. If I had good LTE, it'd be very easy to hit a couple GB, or tens of GB if I watched Netflix.

I was home for most of June (quick trips to Texas and Detroit), then July was three weeks in Trinidad and Tobago, August was three weeks in Thailand, and I'm in week two in Holland. Traveling should wind down at the end of November, I requested to stay in town for a couple of months starting in December.

This is probably a dumb question, but...

I've never ordered a cell phone online before. I'm going to assume that transferring my account and phone number over the new phone is an incredibly easy process and that Apple/iTunes walks me through it step by step... yes?

I tried to find an answer online and it was hard to find a clear cut explanation of how exactly the process works.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

It's been a loooong time, but I want to say "do you want to keep your old cell phone number" is one of the questions iTunes asks you when you do setup.

If you already have an AT&T account, I'm guessing it's super easy.

My thought is that since it seems so hard to find a walkthrough online, it must be so easy it's not worth even discussing.

My problem is that I don't have a lot of time to screw with it. I get the phones on friday (hopefully), leave for an overnight camping trip on Saturday morning, get back sunday night, work monday, have evening plans on monday and then leave for a weeklong trip on Tuesday morning.
