Help!!

why does trying to play itunes thru my stereo receiver not work? Here's what I'm trying to do:
I've got a "y" adapter audio cable (mini jack on one end, component red and white on the other) plugged into my headphone input on my powermac and plugged into either the CD or Phono input on my receiver. I get sound, but it is real low with a lot of hiss and hum. Is there a way to make this work? I'm having a bunch of people for New Years and didn't want to deal with CD's.

I've got an imic, is there a way to use that?

Airtunes does not work in this apartment by the way. I'm in NYC, I can surf wireless no problem, but Airtunes won't work, it keeps stopping and starting.

Any help would be great.
Thanks
Bill

Well, start with the basics and eliminate things systematically....

-Plug in headphones to Mac, do they work?

-Check cable for damage, seated properly

-go into sound prefs, audio out panel, check settings.

-is volume up ?

-try another device into the same line-in on receiver, is receiver set to that component?

I don't know what else....
Please keep in mind the ambiguously selective general understandings we've all agreed upon...

I regularly used my Mac's stereo outs to component amplifier line-in.

This Y lead, it has a stereo mini-jack one end, and two RCA/phono's the other?

You're going from the speaker output on your QuickSilver to a line-in on your reciever?

(line-in = tape, CD, tuner, but not phono . . . )

And you're selecting this input on your reciever?

iTunes volume is up? Mac volume is up?

Thanks for the try, Guys. Never got it to work, I wound up plugging my ipod into the same jack. Worked beautifully.

Can't have everything.

Happy New Year.

Bill, I have the same machine, same software, it works w/o problem.

W.o stating the obvious, did you check your settings for audio in preferences?
Is the volume in the menu & the app up at an an appropriate level?

Sounds odd.

If you continue to have problems, you can get a relatively cheap external usb audio converter --transfers processing of audio outside your mac, they claim better sound, but I never hear a difference on my cheap PC speakers in a normally noisy room... like griffin's iMic.

Good lUck

emark, I don't get it either. I use the headphone jack on the box for my computer speakers and they sound great. I plug my ipod into my stereo receiver using this y splitter cable and it sounds great. But when I try to play itunes thru my stereo using the headphone jack and y cable, the sound is very low with a lot of hum. I've tried all the suggestions posted here. Maybe its something with my receiver....who knows. Thanks for trying though.

This is starting to sound like one of those ground loop problems. Do you have the Mac and the stereo plugged into the same wall outlet/powerstrip?

Try another outlet...

...so how was the party?

shunt, the party was good...real good. I moved the plug like you said...no go, it didn't work.

Thanks for the suggestion.
