I have a 6 year old Powerbook 867 (yes, I Know its old). It worked yesterday and then for some reason when I deleted some podcasts and tried to empty the trash the trash can would not empty. I tried to restart the compter since then and now its sticks at the start up screen loading Mac OS X but it never finishes and goes to the desktop screen...it just sticks.

Unfortunately, I dont have my restore CD as it is in a box somewhere... Does it sound like the finder is corrupted? It was working fine and then poof.

If I cannot get it to work soon I will consider the lowest level MacBook.

P.S. ANy thoughts on refusbished Macs? SHould I just buy a new one?

It sounds like either:

A. Bad ram
B. Dying hard disk

Most likely a hard drive problem since you mentioned that you can't empty the Trash.

Had a similar symptom on mine a while ago (it froze after working for a few minutes). I removed the RAM expansion and everything worked fine. You may want to try this out.

I think the hard drive is dying...

Its still alive, but I will buy a new MacBook and have Apple transfer the data (I hope).

try setting the Pram first..

Apple+Option+P+R on start up, until you hear the chime 3 times.
when you say sticks, does the computer lock up, or can you still move the mouse?

I tried setting the PRAM like you said...

Still gets stuck before the desktop where it says "Starting Mac OX X..." never jumps tot he desktop.

BTW, the mouse still moves the pointer.
