Well at least if you're using Flash for YouTube.

Go to http://www.youtube.com/html5 and select to enter the HTML5 beta. From now on YouTube content will play through HTML5 rather than Flash. On my C2D MBP the CPU load has been reduced by over 50% thanks to this.

If you want to go back to Flash you just go to the same page and select to leave the beta.

Unfortunately this doesn't yet work for embedded YouTube content. But they say it's coming.

There is also a post in the Lounge and I mentioned ClickToFlash which let's you load the QuickTime stream of a YouTube video. I have joined the HTML5 beta but still use ClickToFlash since it stops Flash from automatically loading, and it also supports embedded YouTube clips.

Regardless, this is a great step for HTML5. Hopefully this helps Mozilla change their mind and support h.264.

Strange, on the positive side the processor utilization is definitely lower, but I seem to be getting much more stuttering using Youtube HTML5 mode. Click2Flash seems to perform better. I hope it improves.

It's cool that you can change aspect ratios without having to wait for the page to reload and without your video stuttering, but I wonder what they are going to do to provide fullscreen options?

Sounds great, but:

Videos with ads are not supported (they will play in the Flash player)
Fullscreen is not supported
So this means that about two per cent of the videos will be playable (non-fullscreen) in HTML5, then? I get ads on pretty much every single video I watch.

Definitely a step in the right direction. It's been working pretty well for me so far.

I'm not so worried about fullscreen. But I'd really like to see it work for embedded content ASAP.

I'll be keeping ClickToFlash around anyway. No way Flash gets to load by default just because some page wants to use it.

I joined this a couple days before this thread was created. Ever since then, I've been having problems with QuickTime. Movie trailers won't load (from Apple's site) and trying to watch clips result in a '?' over the QT icon in the window. The stream for the iPad keynote would not load. I wondered if somehow it was related so I went back to YouTube and left the html5 beta and now QT is working great again.

Haven't seen any of those issues with QT here on 10.6.2 so far.

I really seem to get worse results with HTML5 than with Click2Flash. Glad it works for others though.

It looks promising. That video on their site is beautiful by the way. Safari averaged 18% C
PU while watching it.

Okay, so what am I doing wrong here? I got a SBOD for about fifteen seconds before the video started to play, and CPU was pretty constant at around 135–150 per cent throughout the entire video (same as Flash video). It stuttered a bit, too (unlike Flash).

Is it because I’m still on Tiger (10.4.11)? The browser is Safari 4.0.4, so it should be supported just fine.
