Since I started using iCloud, my file dialogues all seem to think this is my default. If I want to save a document from e.g. Pages, the machine will always put up iCloud and so I am forced to click my way through the file system to where I actually want the file to go - on the Mac, not iCloud, in 95% of the cases.

Is there a way to change this?

I tried turning on iCloud docs when it was new and I immediately turned it off because of this issue. I've never used it again. At the time, I didn't think there was a work around.

In my situation, I really need to be able to turn on iCloud docs ONLY for Pages and keep it off for Preview, TextEdit and Numbers.

When I think about, there are so many issues with iCloud it still feels like a beta version. I've got tons of entries in my Contacts database where the notes field is duplicated two or three times. Also, there is no way to designate one of your computers or iOS devices as the master device or to reset iCloud using one device as the master.

And...Apple's got the cash to hire enough people to make it right.

Try:

1. Quit all of your open applications
2. Open Terminal on your machine (inside Applications/Utilities)
3. Paste the following and hit return:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain NSDocumentSaveNewDocumentsToCloud -bool false

4. Launch Text Edit or Pages and try to save a document.

I quit using iCloud and started using younity. It is only OS X and Windows to iOS at the moment, but it is getting new features fast.

I appreciate the fix but also am frustrated with the "foreign language" you had to write to make it work - most of us will never know all of that arcane coding. Does it really have to be that complicated? I would think a preference setting for such things would be in order .....

Isn't iCould currently one of the most messed up Apple technologies? Not the sync, but the planning and logic behind it.

I create a textedit document, it saves it to iCloud, and I can't access it on any device other than a mac, even with Pages for iOS.

Half the time I try to save a document that began in iCloud and it returns an error code. Thankfully I know how to duplicate it and move it locally, but how many people can easily deal with that?

Multiple usernames within a family with shared items is unclear at best, and certainly not thought out for mass consumption.

Finally, where is iCloud? It's not in the finder, it's not anywhere to be seen on a Mac -- how will anyone find it without mac geek credentials?

Apple has changed their online storage options multiple times in the last four years. I wouldn't pay for or trust iCloud if I were you.

Use a third-party, more reliable online storage option like Dropbox, Box.net, or Google Drive.

As handy as iCloud has been, it seems like its utility has been matched. It's too bad Apple wasn't more aggressive about building iCloud, it has far more potential than its current implementation.

I'm still amazed that they took AWAY straight up file storage. Being able to map an iDisk directly in the Finder was pretty rad.

Yeah. I miss that, too.

But I think Apple's vision is to completely abstract the file system into invisibility, transparently shifting it into the cloud, not to extend the local file system into the cloud.

Ah well, Dropbox has supplanted it for my needs - and better.
