In the Finder, click on the Apple menu and notice force quit. Hit the shift key...from there you can quit the Finder without having it relaunch. Also, this works with any open app. Not sure if you can actually force-quit the app if the beachball is there, but I thought it was pretty neat nonetheless.

That's pretty nifty--- but I'm unclear why I'd ever want to quit the finder it doesn't appear at least to take up very many resources, does it?

No kidding! Sometimes I trash files from my GarageBand projects, then on attempting to empty the trash, the Finder goes 100% CPU. In fact, just viewing the trash window does the same thing.

the idea is that shift-apple-option-escape force quits whatever application is in the foreground.
