OK, so I accidentally posted the same new topic twice, so I thought I just change this one to something else. It might be kind of lame, but it's the best I could do under pressure.

Most everyone agrees that speed is a problem to at least some degree. Everyone wants bugs fixed.

The question is if you could pick three new or old features that aren't currently in X what would they be? DVD player is coming so no need to mention that.

If you could have native versions of any three applications what would they be?

Would the above be enough to allow you to use X full time?

I'll post the results when this thread dies (which maybe very soon).

Since we MN boys gotta stick together, here's my list:

Features:

1) Support for more hardware (finish the CD-RW and SCSI support, guys)
2) AFP over AppleTalk client support (sometime I'll start a thread about why IP only is a bad idea).
3) Documentation (the truly 'hidden feature' of OS X).

Apps:

1) Virtual PC
2) Office (OK, that's more than one app)
3) Retrospect app (not just the client)

All the apps will be out by Q4, the features will come as they come. If I had all these, I'd happily be in OS X 24/7.

Three new features, huh. Let me see:

1) Complete hardware support on the supported machines. This means drivers for everything these machines originally shiped with. On the Beige G3's, this does include serial and yes, even floppy support, as well as RagePro hardware acceleration (it may not be much, but it's noticeable).
2) Voodoo card support, at least for the V4/V5. My petition's still open; it's at http://www.petitiononline.com/3dfxosx if you want to sign it.
3) Fix that $*(%! bug in the Finder that keeps files from showing up immediately as they're created. Oh, and the long pause when you try to dial a modem if you'd previously dialed and then disconnected.

As for three native apps, that's easier...

1) GIMP. I know this one's a long way off, though supposedly GIMP 2.0 will support multiple frontends so someone could write a Cocoa one, but I suppose in the meantime there's always XFree...
2) GUI configuration apps for Apache and ProFTPd. Once I get my feet under me with Cocoa a little better, I might even consider taking a stab at this.
3) Mozilla 1.0. Either that, or OmniWeb 5.0 with full HTML and CSS support and the ability to force downloads to be sequential rather than concurrent.

Features:
1) Spring-loaded folders
2) Complete multiple-button-mouse support
3) GUI Customization up the wa-zoo.

Apps:
1) Finale (which would necessitate more complete MIDI support)
2) Office
3) Toast

Features
1) Complete hardware suppor i need drivers for my epson printer and i couldn't install OS X on a G3 beige because i have a voodoo 3 card installed :-).
2) GUI administration for some services like apache.
3) A better integration with other networks, like ms, I know that samba exists, but its only a server not a client. If Linux have an implementation of samba with a client, why OS X not???

Apps:
1) Pagemaker, Photoshop and dreamweabear (or something similar like GIMP, but not on x-windows, and its free :-) ).
2) Open Office or Star Office i don't like to work with MS Office because its a easy way to have viruses, and what do you think, next version of office for mac will be the same type of license than XP???
3) Palm Desktop I WANT TO SYNCRONIZE MY PALM ON MY PB WITH STARTING OS 9 :-(
Ti Book G4/512 RAM/60 Gb /SuperDrive
Mac OS X 10.2.x
Olympus Camedia 3040Z

w00t! Another ProFTPd user...I love this server. For the kind of security I needed and ease of configuration, it beat out the default BSD FTPd with no contest (or I just wasn't looking in the right places for the BSD FTPd config stuff).

Ok, now back to the topic...I only have two for each category...

Features:
DVD - I know you said not to say it, but it is the ONLY think keeping me from using OS X full time.
Native Palm hotsync - I don't care if the PalmDesktop application stays in classic because I rarely use it, but I would love to be able to install software on my Visor w/out using classic.

Apps:
DVD player -
Photoshop or GIMP - for my purposes, either will do (except I will need to learn the GIMP). Right now, I am content running Photoshop 5.5 in classic, and am about to start learning GIMP using XFree, so whoever gets there first will probably be my choice (which right now is looking to be the GIMP).

Cheers.

I've given up on getting any new features and just want Apple to fix at least some of the bugs.

Apps
  • Native email client
  • Photoshop
  • a usable Finder
And various other apps.

It will depart at 20 minutes to 5.

fix the following:
1- internet connect hang (has lasted as long as 6 minutes!!!)

2- no refresh for directory sizes and disk size - when I empty the trash, the available disk space does not change)

3- There needs to be a hard coded key combo to kill -HUP the window manager: so many times I have had to restart the machine because the window manager was frozen and Darwin was fine

3.5- I really want to use my USB smartmedia card reader!!!!!

Apps
1- MS Word: as much as I hate to admit it, this is the best word processor out there. I really want to use AppleWorks, but I just get frustrated and threaten to delete it every time I try to use it (my list of complaints is extensive, I won't go into it here).

2- Toast Titanium (When this ships, I will be first in line!!!)

3- GAMES!!!!! Unreal, Quake, Deus Ex!!!

Features:

- Data CD burning (for backups)
- Scanner support
- Sleep for firewire HD (not sure if this is a problem with the OS, the HD, or the standard - but after putting my Cube to sleep the sound of my external Maxtor is driving me crazy - Maxtor removed the power switch )

Applications:

- RealPlayer (without it my Mac is not the digital center Steve Jobs talks so much about)
- MS Office
- Photoshop

Developer:

- Objective-C++ (will give me better support of using C++ objects in my Cocoa apps - this is being worked on)
- Documentation - No more "Description forthcoming"
- Better debugger - with support for Cocoa Objects - It is not good enough to see only the object ids for NSStrings for example.
