I am in Australia and connect to the Telstra Bigpond network via OS9 using NTS ENTERNET software. I then use IPnetRouter to share the connection to the other machines in the house.

I am now selling one of my imacs, (I have 2 350's) so I can only play around with OSX on the SERVER machine.

I am faced with the dillema of not being able to use internet on OSX because i wont be able to connect!! They dont make ENTERNET for OSX.

Here's the Question: ]Supposedly you can connect with PPPoE in OSX, how do I do this???

I dont see how it is possible, how would OSX recognise the DSL box?

I tried once but failed miserably.

Can anyone talk me through it step by step?

In System Preferences choose Network.

Configure Ethernet.

TCP/IP tab: set up your TCP/IP. PPPoE tab: provide only your username and password, ignore the other settings.

Worked for me at a friends house (who use Pacific Bell's PPPoE).

Best of luck to you.

I was using enternet until OSX, now I connect via PPPoE. Works very well.
I have the following question: is it possible to do the same but via airport. When you choose airport there is no PPPoE tab.

If PPPoE is not working for you then try PPTP-Gui

PPTP-Gui works for me on ADSL in Holland.

Strange thing was that in OS X's 'Network-prefs' I had to enter another DNS than provided by my isp for use in OS 9.
I found this after an hour of searching on ADSL-settings around the net.
Check your isp's internet site for info on its DNS.
Tweak some settings around (as I did before I got it to work), because things seem a bit dim on this topic. (My isp doesn't support ADSL on OS X)

Good luck!!

b.t.w. PPPoE had nothing to do with my settings, leaving it of works. Having it activated doesn't work.

if there were no Mac
it would be necessary to invent one

dsl works fine here in germany, at least with my isp. just entered the data in system preferences. the only thing is that tcpdump always tells me pppoe0 wasn't configured.

same dns as under os 9.

Spike - update to Airport 1.3.1 in 9. Update the base station software using the Base Station admin. configure the base station. there will be a PPPoE tab . tell the base station to connect using PPPoE. plug your DSL modem into the base station using the ethernet jack.

then, from OSX, just connect via airport and voila. you get the DSL connection. works like a charm.

if you have multiple clients, base station NAT will take care of distributing local IP addresses while displaying only one to the outside world.

Might add if you have Classic applications you need to connect over the net, disable Macpoet when using Mac OS X. There is a conflict between Macpoet and Mac OS X's built-in PPoE support. You still should be able to connect using Mac OS X's built-in support, as networking of X is automatically shared with Classic. You can even use X's dialup and have Remote Access disabled in Classic, and still be able to navigate the web with Netscape.
