A woman just dropped him off because his mate died and there will be no babies to sell now.
She didn't want him anymore.
He's a little Gouldian Finch and his song is just unbelieveable!

I'd call him Cpt. Canada, looks like the Canadian flag on his face.
Beautiful birds!

It is a very nice bird but I always think the idea of an animal that can fly in a tiny little cage all its life is very cruel.

Gorgeous little bird. How many hours a day will you be around him or are you going to get him a companion? As you probably know, birds need a tremendous amount of attention and interaction if they're in captivity for any period of time. Or are finches more independent than parrots, parakeets, love birds, etc.?

I have a whole flock of birds and I rehab wildbirds constantly.
My main pet is a citron cockatoo named Roxy. I also have a pair of spice finches that are in the process of breeding for the first time. I have a budgie that was given to me many years ago and he just keeps on going!
The new little finch is in a huge cage and can fly effortlessly around in it. I am going to make the investment and buy him a new mate. Gouldian finch females are very expensive around $150.
My cockatoo only goes into her cage to eat and sleep otherwise she is free to roam around in the birdhouse.(a huge building behind my house I converted just for birds)

Now I realize why the woman dropped him off for you. It sounds like you have a very nice set up that gives a good life to the birds in your care. That new bird is gorgeous.

Maybe the bird is happy to always have abundant food, water and safety.
I think its cruel to let birds fly around in the wild, because they could suffer from starvation and die, or be cruelly killed and eaten by a predator.

Beautiful bird BoomStick! By the way, how is the hawk (my memory is bad but I think it was a hawk) you rescued recently?

Fine, I'll lock you in a cage and give you food and you can live rent free on top of it.

When I owned budgies we would let them fly around the house. They would open their cage door, fly around the house, and when they came back to eat or sleep they would fly back to their cage, go in, and close the door behind them.

So, how are you fit for leather and chains?

I would've named him "Choking Hazard."
Goes from yellow, to blue, to red.

Impressive! Did they 'go to the bathroom' in their cage also, or did you find little surprises?

I'm not a big bird fan. My neighbor's little squacker was annoying as hell. That bird was evil.
But it looks like a cool bird. The colors are very odd. That bright cyan between the head and the blue/green parts is really odd. Someone pointed this out before, but the bird's head looks like the Canadian flag. You have the white part in the middle with that red maple leaf shape right on his beak. Try to get a picture from the front. That is very strangein a good way.
Cool.

They "went" in two places - in the cage or behind the curtains in our living room. They liked to perch atop the curtain rods. Basically we had to pull back the curtains and wash the walls every few days.

I love birds.
We've always had parrots. They're great. But, they need a lot of attention or else it's cruel to keep them locked up without any interaction. They are very smart.
Congratulations on your new little charmer.
He's a cutie-pie!
