My friend has a 15" flat panel Imac and needs (me) to install the internal memory chip. The memory has already been purchased from RAMJET. I know I need a torx-15 screwdriver to get into the internals, but beyond that what else do i need to look out for or do once i'm in there. Will I need to remove the heatsink/fan off the cpu? if so, I assume i'll need thermal paste (silver), which i already have.

While i'm in there I may replace the internal hard drive with something more respectable, this should be pretty standard, but is there anything i should beware?

I've installed ram in several unix servers and PC's so I have no fear of field stripping this thing and putting it back together.

Thanks in advance for your time, and effort.

When re-assembling the iMac, watch out for the cables. It's real easy to get one caught in the screw mounts and short out the powersupply or logic board.

Use magnetic tips on the internal screws. If you drop one it will fall into the power supply and you will have to re-disassemble to get it out (they almost never shake out).

Good luck!

Thanks a lot guys, that's exactly what i needed. One question though, the one "pretty solid" connection they speak of in the 2nd step which is shown in the 2nd image, how long is that cable which connects the two? is it a pain to reconnect this when i'm putting it back together? According to the image shown there's no slack to the connection what so ever. I suppose I'll figure it out when I see it.

thanks again.
