Is this PM really too stupid to recognize 512MB DIMMs. In the technotes is mentioned, that it supports up to 256MB DIMMs, however the document is from 1999.

Has anyone experiances with upgrading the "Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics)" with 512MB DIMMs or is it really impossible?

I've put 512s in there and they either aren't recognized or they show up as 256s. It's incredibly annoying.

It's possible that a firmware upgrade or something could fix this, but even if that were the case, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Apple to release such a thing.

256MB sticks are the largest that will work in machines with Yosemite boards unfortunately. I have never heard of a 512MB stick that works.

The Yikes! G4 is basically a blue & white G3 with a G4 ZIF shoehorned in to it. At the time the blue & white G3s came out, 512MB DIMMs were virtually impossible to find, thus were never supported. The Grackle memory controller supports only up to 1GB of RAM (in 4 slots).
