why do i have to format on my PC to use as a disk?

my ipod is formatted for mac, when i plug into my pc to use as a disk, it comes up with a dialgoue box saying it isnt formated and would i like to format it?
anyone help?

you have to format the iPod on the PC - this is because the PC can't view Mac formatted drives. But once you have formatted it on the PC, the Mac will be able to read the PC formatted iPod, so you'll be able to use it on both machines.

Make sure you format it using the iPod utility on Windows and not just formatting it within Windows itself.

I'd suggest you plonk down $40 and buy MacDrive 6. Then the PC can read the iPod just fine, no formatting necessary. And you can use it as a disk from both systems, and won't have to re-load your songs. I used it for an old 5 GB iPod 3 years ago, it was flawless.

thanx for the replies. i formated it as a PC ipod, so its fine now, hopefully ill have nothing to do with PC's in the future.
