i'm trying to get an .avi file to play on my friends laptop, keeps saying an error was encountered, what does she need to play .avi files?

windows media player should be able to handle this.

that's what i thought, i burned the disc gave it to her today, she came home opened it up and it says error encountered. I know the file is good, it plays fine for me using vlc.

What was the fix?

Buy a Mac with OS X and use VLC?

VLC is available for windoze too. It doesn't phone home every now and then either.

well originally i had her download some file from divx.com which wasn't working at first even after a restart. she got it working now, she is not the best with computers, and i am having to help her through this over the phone.

I have a LAN-only website on my college campus where I host lots of video files and I specifically tell people to download VLC first so that they don't email me asking how to play the files, a lot of which are .avi encoded with Xvid and the like.
