As we all know, this is standard practice....if no one cared, we wouldn't have all these rumor sites going strong.

Read the article. They are measuring interest by the number of hits. It doesn't mean the PowerBook G5 is imminent but that it will be out sooner than some think. They then compare the interest for the PBG4 compared to the PBG5 when released. Basic statistics survey that most companies have on their websites. Some pre-PBG5 site HTML code has leaked for the time being either to stir up interest (get people to put the money aside) or by accident.

The difference between this article and your comment: this article provides some sort of back-up, and insight.

No, the article provides speculation and nothing more.

Apple is notorious for red herrings. Remember the 'iPod radio' leak just a few weeks ago (right before macworld)?
And remember that there was a reference to a pb G5 in some text within the OS, which was then removed on subsequent OS revisions.
I think the biggest mistake is that concept that the PB G5 will be as big a leap in processing power as we experienced for the desktop machines. SATA notebook hard drives have not even been released; currently, any PB G5 is going to be handicapped by the hard drive, regardless of CPU speed. Even a 2 GHz G5 PB without a decent 7200 rpm HD is going to suffer compared to dual G5 machines.
At the same time, I'm saving my $$ for a rev B model!

The 4 key is right next to the 5 key on my keyboard, and I know I've hit the wrong key by accident a few times. I'd be glad to be proved wrong, but I think the consensus is that we won't see one for a few months, at least.
Again, you never know with Apple, though!

I don't think this is a red herring.
Apple has gone out of its way to emphasize that there won't be a G5 PowerBook anytime soon, so why would they release fake info about it?
I suspect that they are seeing a noticeable decline in PowerBook G4 sales because of people "holding out" for the G5 PowerBooks. It is taking Apple much longer than they would like to be able to introduce a G5 PowerBook, and so they are saying that there won't be one for a while.
Why would they intentionally fuel speculation which is already hurting their PowerBook G4 sales by planting a fake rumor such as this?

Typo?
And I don't really consider a hidden URL that no one is supposed to even see in the source of the page as "releasing fake info."
Yep, and actually, anything you type in there works, and gets you a 1x1 image. For example:
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/fhqwhgads
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/charless_is_great
http://switch.atdmt.com/action/sorry...error_occurred
All get you a 1x1 image. So much for the Register's claim that the existence of the filename both on Apple's site and on Avenue A's site proves that this is real...
Sorry, folks - I want to believe, but this is most likely a typo.

Exactly. I was posting in response to the person who suggested that this was one of Apple's "red herring rumors"

Even if there is one on the way soon, I wouldn't want the first one on the block, I would rather have Rev B. All the initial bugs are generally out by then. You all should know this by now.
