OS 9.0.4 install problem

I tried to install OS 9.0.4 and as I loaded the OS CD I got a message that my hard drive was unrecognizable and needed to be initialized. ( I am not excited about initializing my HD and what if the does not work?)
I have a 2 year old beige G3/300 with 128 meg of RAM running OS 8.6. I checked the system profiler and under the HD format it reads "Mac OS Extended HFS+".
I was going to install OS 9.0.4 as a prelude to OS X. What do I need to do? If I wait for the final release of OS X will I likely experience this problem?
Thanks

first, try running your HD utils app(s) to check that HD... (Norton Disk Doctor, DiskWarrior, TechToolPro, whatever...) and rebuild your desktop and maybe zap the PRAM
btw, Norton Disk Doctor trial version is available HERE
yes it is a beta software but i have used it on four different models of Macs with NO troubles whatsoever
