Hi. I have an iMac that is hard-wired (ethernet), and my girlfriend has a MacBook and iPad that we use wirelessly. Since I do all the work maintaining our photo library (editing, rating, names, etc.), I would like to have all the devices share my one library.

My understanding is that I can do it one of two ways.

1. A networked drive, through something like Airport Extreme.

2. Using the 'Share my library' setting in iPhoto.

(I realize I can also keep the library on a small USB drive, but that is not very practical)

The second option seems to be the most attractive, as it wouldn't require me to buy an Airport Extreme. I tried it though, and her laptop didn't see my iMac. Are there other network settings that need to be tweaked ?

I'm running OS-X 10.5.8 with iPhoto '09 on my iMac, and iPhoto '08 on her macbook.

Thanks !

Your iMac is hard-wired to what hardware, and she connects wirelessly to what hardware?

I'm not entirely sure, but the only way I know of sharing your library via option 2 is by using Front Row...

Option 1 (or some variation) would be your best bet. You don't necessarily need network-attached storage either. If you guys are on the same network (i.e. she gets wireless from the same router you are wired to), she should be able to access folders you have shared using Bonjour. So just put your library in a shared folder might be enough.

Understand, the above solution probably won't work with the iPad (not sure whether or not it will recognize Bonjour shares, but I'm doubting it). But the iPad will still be updated when she syncs it with her MacBook.

iPhoto has to be the same version on both computers to share the library.
This is Apple's How To on sharing libraries
