I have a new Macbook. I have connected it to my Samsung 750 series TV using mirror display and the picture works great but how do I get the audio to play. I fooled around with midi hdmi and nothing happened. I don't really understand MIDI anyhow. I have an Apple TV but I don't know how to get it to send material such as netflix instant to my TV it seems as if everything must come out of ITunes and that doesn't work for my situation

Just use the headphone out of your MacBook, and connect it to some audio in on your TV.
Read your TV manual how to set the audio in to the HDMI channel.

MIDI is NOT the right thing here at all.

You pretty much got it right when you said everything must come out of iTunes with the AppleTV. There is nothing built in to the Apple TV to support 3rd party streaming as far as I know.
