Quick question:

Can someone tell me the difference between a Bed & Breakfast and a more traditional hotel?

Someone is recommending a B&B to me in the UK for my next trip. I don't know what to expect. Are there any limitations to the times that I can come & go? Will I get my own bathroom? Anything else I need to know?

B&B's don't follow a universal set of rules, so the answers to all your questions could easily be yes or no. B&B's could be more interesting and less money. A hotel will likely be generic- could be in London, could be in Chicago- no real difference.

I'd go the B&B route, it will most likely be a wonderful experience, and if it turns out to suck, it will make a great story.

We always stay at B&Bs. Typically, B&Bs fall into 2 categories:

1) Using a room in an existing house ala "renting a room from an old lady".
2) Using a room that was expressly added to the property for rental.

Many B&Bs have both: a main house in which one or more rooms are available with other rooms/duplexes/cottages scattered on the property.

That said, you're basically staying in someone's home, so it's totally up to them to make the rules. Depending on the B&B, you may have to share everything -- or you may be totally isolated from everyone (which is what we like).

So pick your vacation spot and research the highest rated B&Bs in that area -- then call for details.

All the B&Bs I've stayed at have been really nice. I stayed at a great one in Boston (the Beech Tree Inn, I think it was called) where I got a queen size bed, a bathroom of my own, and no restrictions on when I could come and go. They also had free Wi-fi.

You should be able to find reviews for whatever B&Bs you look at, so read up!

The B&B we always stay in when we visit Fredericksburg every year is Rose-Hill Manor. You can see what I'm talking about as far as the different rooms (main house, on property/detatched, etc.).
