Don't be silly, this is clearly for all the US citizens and service people working over there. It's never been proven that any Japanese bought HD-DVD players.

Sony will be releasing Blu-ray Profile 1.1 players this summer.

-----

Sony will be introducing two new Blu-ray Disc Players. One the first week of July 2008, Model# BDP-S350, which passes all high bit advanced audio codecs (like the Panasonic DMP-BD30) to an outboard decorder (Pre-Amp or Receiver) and will be Profile 1.1. The other player, coming out the first week of August 2008, the BDP-S550, will incorperate all the high bit advanced audio codec decoders in the player and will also be Profile 1.1. Both are HDMI 1.3a, catagory 2 compliant (output). Load times are faster. Both will play CD's, but not SACD.

The tentative price points will be:

Sony BDP-S350 $ 349.99
Sony BDP-S550 $ 449.99

-----

However, these players will be Profile 2.0 ready:

-----

Sony Unveils 2 BD Players, 21 Bravia LCD TVs - 2/26/2008 6:11:00 AM - TWICE

The new Blu-ray Disc players include the BDP-S350 (retailing this summer for around $400), which will ship with the ability to play back Bonus View (picture-in-picture) running commentary tracks and will be BD Live ready, meaning a forthcoming optional firmware update will allow the players to connect to the Internet to take advantage of Web-enabled extras currently being produced as bonus content for future Blu-ray Disc releases.

To carry out the capability, the players will include a built-in Ethernet port for connectivity, and external USB port for local storage. Other features will include 1080/60p and 24p True Cinema resolution output, 7.1-channel Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital Plus surround sound decoding and bit-stream output, as well as dts-HD high resolution audio and Master Audio bit-stream output.

-----

Those specs are good enough for me, but I'd like to see much lower street pricing.

LAME. How hard is it to put in an internal 40-60 GB HD?

Not hard, but it costs money. And you might need extra cooling.

Plus, not everyone wants and needs this, so I think it's good they make it optional.

Still, they could have included the necessary 1gb of storage required for spec 2.0 by just throwing in some flash memory. It's cheaper than even a 40 gig hard drive and requires no cooling.

I agree. If it's necesasary for 2.0 to work, yes, 1GB should be included.

I don't understand why you want to push the PS3 so much. Some people just don't want it. Why is that a problem?

Some people may want audio output options (both in hardware and format). Some people may want to use their universal remotes with their primary playback system. Why the hostility?

Cuz the same people have no problem with an xbox 360 and HD-DVD add on monstrosity and it has even worse audio support.

Really? I remember lots of people (including Eug) recommending it. They may not have said it was the best out there, but did say that it was good.

I remember people recommending it as a cheap way to get HD if you already had a 360. But if you didn't the HD-A2 was the favorite to recommend (followed by the A3 with the two movies in the box).

The PS3 used to be the cheapest Blu-Ray player available, and it's upgradeability made it an obvious choice. Now, however, other players are cheaper (though not necessarily better), so it can't just be the default choice anymore. Some people want other things out of their player that the PS3 doesn't offer. I don't see the reason to dismiss these things offhand now that the Blu-Ray player market is starting to mature.

And as time goes on, the PS3 will only look worse as a Blu-Ray player as other players drop in price and add features.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

I own one, it's in the family/game room attached to my LCD and it works very well there. It simply isn't the right product for my HT, for reasons I explained earlier.

Why are Blu-Ray players still around $300? I woulda figured that after Blu-Ray won the race that the prices would drop under $200.

Why would it get CHEAPER when they have no competition? HD-DVD wasn't making it more expensive.

And the reason being because of costs. HD-DVD lost an assload of money on each player sold.

That would probably be zero IIRC. I don't like consoles for players, and wouldn't recommend one to any non-geek either.

I just got one because it was the cheapest one at the time (and I already had the 360).

I just hope they don't make it a custom device that costs 50 bux or something.

How's this for pushing the 360 HD DVD angle...

Canadians can get the 360 HD DVD for $39.99 at The Source online now. It still qualifies for the free movies, if you buy by the end of tomorrow.

I dunno, the way I look at it, in 5 years when I replace my XBOX 360 with a PS4 or XBOX 1080 or Nintendo Wang, I'll have to drag that damn thing out to watch the few HD-DVD movies I have. Not worth it in the long run, IMO.

Yes. Macs too.

Except you can't burn anything with it, so I don't know what'd you'd do with it on a computer, unless you're running PowerDVD on a Windows machine. And you can browse HD DVDs on Leopard... but not play them unless they have no DRM and use H.264. It plays DVDs just fine though.

Same rumours as posted before. ie. No new info. If you're going to believe those rumours, you may as well believe the $400 million rumours for Warner's buyoff.

Doesn't sound like much of a "rumor" when the company itself says: "As you know, we have been well-compensated for our support. It really is in their court at this point to really declare what the next step will be."

The strange part is Sony is including the USB flash thingy with the 550. So, it's still "optional" and requires USB, but they give it to you in the box anyway. Why not just build it in (which would actually be cheaper)? Or maybe they only want to put one USB jack on the thing, and having this as a plug-in device allows you to remove it to add a bigger one later. Personally, I'd just want the 1 GB built-in, with another USB port empty. Certainly the extra $100 for the price of the higher end model justifies that.

Indeed. I'm sure that ALL the major studios were paid off at some point. Remember Disney's refusal to deny they got an incentive deal? That's the idea of these exclusivity deals after all.

However, it's not as if he said "We got paid $154.324252 million" for their exclusivity.

Fine. Lets say it is old news but for some reason you still call a direct admission from the head honcho a "rumor".

But out of interest... where did someone else post that direct quote admitting the pay off?
