I did a search in this forum and saw that others have had system-wide freezes in which the force-quit command doesn't work.

I can't tell if an app crashes first, which leads to the system crash, or vice versa.

Did anyone find a solution to this? Or even a cause of it? Does Apple know about it?

This has happened to me three times now, the latest 5 minutes ago.

One app would freeze. Force-quitting said app would destabilize the system, and every subsequent app would beachball ( and I can't force-quit them, even kill -9 doesn't work )

This progresses to the point that I have to ssh in and force reboot it.

This sucks.

i had this problem. i had a different password for my keychain than my login password. once i changed the two the problem went away.

when i would log in, mail.app was set to auto-start. sometimes, the system would ask for my pakeychain password, and if it did, everything was fine. if it didn't have a chance, usually mail.app would be unresponsive, and crash (actually crash the dock since i tried force-quitting it there with the option key).

also, i have had problems with mirroragent, which is in charge of syncing with idisk. it seemed to give me trouble with both auto-syncing and manual syncing.

not sure how your system is set-up, but these are the ways i've had to deal with the major problems with panther.

I had to hard-restart twice yesterday because the Finder went bonkers trying to copy files to my iDisk. Killing the finder, and killing the login window both just resulted in a still-dead finder upon relaunch. I have yet to get more than 6 days uptime out of 10.3. Chess.app locked up my machine HARD a couple days ago. No mouse, no keyboard, no beachball,no nuthin. did it twice in a row.
