I can't get to my account at the moment.

Server Error
Gmail is temporarily unavailable. Cross your fingers and try again in a few minutes. We're sorry for the inconvenience.
How do you guys get invites? Do they just show up in your inbox? If so, I haven't received any.

Thank you very much Andy. I couldn't justify spending 100 bucks on .mac now that I have my college webspace.

But i get the same error as xi_hyperon, hopefully they will fix that soon.

Some of my thoughts after playing around with GMail:

My biggest gripe is the lack of IMAP accessibility. I understand that this would bypass the Google ads and negate the usefulness of the Google search, but still... Because of this, I can't import my old e-mail from other accounts. Also, if I ever want to leave GMail, I'll be screwed as I won't be able to export my e-mail out of their system and onto my computer. It seems to be all or nothing, forcing me to use GMail for everything forever, or use it for nothing.

My second biggest gripe is the lack of features. My account over at Airpost.net has so many amazing features I have grown to love. For example, simple things like random/rotating signatures, bouncing/redirecting messages, the address book interface (GMail's is lackluster), the ability to upload and store files, and the ability to set up "personalities" for your other addresses. There are also really complicated features like auto-syncing with a Hotmail account or migrating all of your e-mail/folders from another account to this one via IMAP.

The pluses:
1 Gig of space and unlimited bandwidth is great. Also, as you would probably expect, the Google search tool is top-notch. Although I am not sure it is so good that they decide we no longer need to archive our e-mails into folders of our own choosing. I like folders. Can Google really figure out that everything from John Smith's 10 e-mail addresses really came from that one person? I'm not so sure.

I know this is still in beta, but I would really like to see them add some of these features.

You can use labels the same way as folders. But they're more useful, IMO, because labels don't force a one-to-one relationship like folders do.

I'd certainly like to see more features too, but this is still a beta service.

Hey all, I was just told about this place, then I saw this thread, and figured I better make my 1st post here count So, if anyone has the heart to spare an invite to a super n00b, I would be more than thrilled, and promise to return the favor 5 fold if I get the chance to! This looks like an extremely active community, so get ready to see me alot more often, as you all seem to be the same sort of Geek as me! If it's a no go on the invite, hey, no sweat, it will happen to me one day too, I'm sure, that won't offend me in the least. Anyways, just putting my name out there, and saying, "Hi!" Gimmee, gimmee, gimmee

If you are the one with the geeky heart of gold, please send the news to jthemonkey[@]sbcglobal[.]net

But while folders are hierarchical, labels are not. I guess technically labels might give you more functionality than a folder structure, but their ease of use in such a situation would be almost unbearable. I'm not even sure Google's interface allows you to leverage the full power of labels.

Basically, it's much harder to work with a couple hundred labels than it is to work with a tree of folders.

I would also love to see them incorporate GPG into their system. How would that be for getting e-mail encryption out into the general public?

A couple hundred? I think it's a lot easier personally -- I use labels in combination with filtering and searching and I don't need to bother with a huge hierarchy of folders anymore... But I always approached folders as a personal enemy when organizing my mail, so I'm very happy for an alternative solution

Perhaps you can suggest to them that they add 'sub-labels' so that it's possible to form hierarchies.

I don't know... I'm yet to be convinced. How many labels do you have?

The lack of importing/exporting ANYTHING is a serious problem at this point. Yeah, the 1GB is nice, but everything crashes eventually.

I have around 25, I think (can't access Gmail from work). But two of mine are just set up with filters to label messages forwarded from my old accounts, so that I know to notify the sender that my address changed.

Hey, since I now have a GMAIL account - Does anybody know the max file size that can be transferred ?

I mean, the 1 gig storage and all is cool, but ill have a different opinion if one can only send a meg or two max.

Can I receive a 100 meg file on gmail for example ? Anybody know ?

10 megs is the limit on sending and receiving. Also, you can not send executable files (even if they are zipped),

Ok, 10 megs is not that bad. Sure beats the hell out of hotmail.

When you mean executables - do you mean like .EXE ? There's no equivelant for Mac I believe.

I know .exes are filtered. I am positive there is a way for Google to scan for Macintosh executables, too, I'm just not sure if they do.

Anyone want to start sending me some viruses?

Oh, I just realized, you wanna get spammed.

3778 messages were received, totaling 213 MB. 3917 were spam, and Gmail correctly identified 41.9% of these messages.

Seems a bit off. 3917 out of 3778 were spam ?

Question:
When using Gmail with Safari, one of the shortcuts to go back to your inbox is g then i, but whenever I do that I get a system beep, followed by the expected output. Is this happening to everyone or is it something that I'm doing incorrectly?
