Rosenstein isn't reliable. Trump needed more cover, and Sessions determined providing it was less risky than not.

I reckon subego meant this from Trump's perspective: Rosenstein's decision to appoint a special counsel means he isn't loyal to Trump.

I'm going to give in to ease of communication.
There's reliable, and there's cockholster reliable.
I'm talking about the second kind. They knew he wasn't that from lack of moisture.

They didn't need reliable they needed cover. They were asking him for a list of grievances. If he didn't deliver Sessions could have gotten involved at the cost of a whole day perhaps.

Look, your reply is entirely logical, and I think Trump's actions just aren't based on logic. Trump could have fired Comey for the same motives in a manner that could be politically explainable. Instead, he has no filter between his brain and mouth that prevents him from saying things that will get him into deep trouble.

We're talking Sessions here, though. Presumably he had a choice in the matter. He chose to get involved even though he shouldn't.

The cover doesn't hold up as well if the guy resigns in protest the next day for being used as cover.
The scuttle is that's what he threatened.

Again you're using something after the fact to justify their reasoning. If they had known that they wouldn't have used him at all.

I'm using things which happened after the fact to judge his character, which is presumably unchanged from before he wrote the memo, and to some extent, known to his bosses.
They took a risk, which looks like it's not going to pan out. The possibility of that is why Sessions had to be attached.

I have to assume Trump dragged Sessions into it, who may have dragged Rosenstein in to try to get the heat off him. But the damage was done.

No question. Whatever objections Sessions had, Trump, culling from his years of experience in these types of matters, replied to him "this is not what I'm paying you for".

My read is with the Comey testimony coming up, Trump is looking to blame Sessions for getting him into this mess.

Comey expected Sessions to recuse himself regarding Russia weeks before it happened but can't discuss why in open Session. This gives me life.

I'm pretty sure I read this last week and I was going to post it, but in context I found it to be harmless. I think the third being referred to is that hotel speech gave early on where Kislyak was present. I don't recall the details anymore, but it didn't come off as alarming.
About the only thing I will say is where are the non-russian foreign meetings he forgot about. And if this is on top of his 'revised' paperwork he submitted, meaning he need another revision.

As far as job security, I think the FBI director search is showing that its difficult for this admin to get willing and qualified job applicants. Trying to replace an AG would be another nightmare they don't need.

It's notable discussion wasn't in the open session.
I get the impression it wasn't in his revision.

My guess is compartmentalization means he can't discuss anything about Sessions, whether its applicable or not. To me, the implication was there was something beyond these meetings that cast a shadow over his neutrality. But I fully admit this is speculation based on his minimal testimony.
Would a few unreported meetings be enough to cause Comey to expect Sessions to recuse himself weeks before he did so? If the answer is yes, then I guess it could be nothing overall.

I'm assuming they assumed recusal because they've got some serious dirt.
I guess I'm connecting the meeting to that, perhaps incorrectly.

Sessions' latest move (before his testimony): asked Congress to let him prosecute medical marijuana in states that have legalized it. It seems States' Rights passed by voters should only be honored when he agrees with them.

Yes I wanted to mention that this morning. MEDICAL marijuana. I'd love for him to show me on the doll where marijuana touched him. That's a pretty strong obsession.

So, how about Schroedinger's Executive Privilege?
I thought Harris did a fantastic job demonstrating what a load of BS Sessions was trying to sell.
Hopefully I'll do an in-depth dive later because there's more to unpack than you'd think a testimony full of 'i don't recalls' and 'i can't answer thats' would have.

I honestly can't remember what the first thing was. The second was this: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-w...cts-with-russi
A recently launched ethics watchdog group called American Oversight filed a Freedom of Information Act request in March for sections of the Standard Form 86 relating to Sessions' contact "with any official of the Russian government."
The group then filed a lawsuit in April after it said the government didn't provide the documents.
A day late, the Justice Department complied this morning with a federal court order and released part of a security clearance form dealing with Attorney General Jeff Sessions' contacts with foreign governments.
On June 12, a judge had ordered the agency to provide the information within 30 days, a deadline that passed on Wednesday.
This is what they released:
Seems like an obvious **** you.

I guess it was the National Security Copier Act of 2016. The sheer quantity of redactions caused a worldwide shortage of toner.
