Just for research looked at the pc side, nothing there except the Samsung X30 which looks like a nice option for those who need to use PC's (like me unfortunately).
It's not as good looking (and runs xp), but still means things are moving forward.

It still uses that horrible PC styled keyboard with all the keys on the right side of the keyboard (you know the home, end, Pg Up, Pg Dn). I truly think the PowerBook has the most ideal keyboard for a laptop, even if it lacks a num pad.
15 inch MacBook Pro 2.16 GHz, 2 GB RAM, 7200 RPM 100GB HDD.

Dual 2.5 GHz Power Mac G5, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD, ATI Radeon X800XT.

Ironically, considering we're talking about a Windows laptop, when I clicked the Samsung link I got a page saying, 'We are sorry - an error has occurred.'

These two are the closest to a PowerBook 15" that I have seen so far. I had owned a Compaq X1000 series too.

Sony PowerBook Clone

Compaq X1030

Both are Centrino laptops. Light, powerful, quiet.

But still not PowerBooks though....

Samsung has had slim and thin designs for two years now. The X30 is a little ugly tho, but the specs kill the Powerbook:

Intel Pentium M 1.7GHz processor
nVidia GeForce FX5200 Go with 64MB DDR video memory
15.4" WSXGA+ (1680 x 1050) TFT display
512MB PC-2700 DDR memory
80GB 5400RPM UDMA hard disk
SPDIF digital audio optical output with 5.1 surround sound
8xDVD/24x write/24x re-write/24x CD DVD/CDRW

not i.

i don't see the point of this thread, unless it were named 'sad attempts to copy powerbook'. hasn't been done since the first powerbook, i don't think it will ever happen. i've tried most of the others; the porsche design one is nice, but still a windows machine.

Sleek laptops didn't start with the Tis though. Apple just did it better.

Come again? Kill the PowerBook? Let's look at each spec:

-The G4 will be faster than the Pentium M.
-The Radeon Mobility 9600 is decidedly faster than that nVidia.
-A screen with that resolution results in text too small for many people to read comfortably.
-RAM? Same as my PowerBook.
-HD? Same as my PowerBook.
-The digital audio output is the only thing it has better.
-Whooptiedoo, I have a DVD-R drive in my PowerBook.

Significantly, it lacks a DVI output -- it has only VGA.

Curiously, it has an internal fingerprint scanner. I wonder if it's one of the models that can be defeated with a gummy bear.

Did you mistakenly leave of a negative qualifier here (as in "will not be faster than")? Even the low-end Pentium-M based laptops outperform the Powerbooks at nearly every crossplatform benchmark including G4 stalwarts like Photoshop bakeoffs.

At one point Barefeats had a decent set of them (Photoshop 7, Cinebench 2003, Bryce 5, Quake 3, UT2003 and After Effects 6) between a P-M 1.3GHz w/ crappy integrated graphics and a number of powerbooks, including a lapzilla (here: http://barefeats.com/al15.html), but, for whatever reason, they removed most of it and all that's left is this:
http://barefeats.com/al15b.html
(note the P-M laptop in the UT2K3 benchmark is crippled by an integrated Intel "Extreme" Graphics chipset)

On the Arstechnica forums you can also find a number of Powerbook and Pentium-M results for PS7Bench and Cinebench.

Regardless of the speed issue, it still runs (well maybe crawls) windoze - with its daily or even hourly security patches and inconsistant user interface.

Even if the pc runs quicker, I can work faster thanks to the mac's thoughtful design, the implementation of OSX. Besides its just plain cooler

yes, to say the g4 will be faster than a pentium m is just plain wrong on most accounts. lets face it, we don't own/buy powerbooks for pure speed anyway.
