Your carrier makes a difference. Some (like AT&T) have programs that let you do what you want - under certain conditions. We are on AT&T and were half-way through a 2-year commitment for my wife's and my iPhone 4s's when our son's phone gave up the ghost. Under their "Next" plan, we got new 5s's, and he got his choice of a Windows phone, our bill only went up a bit because I got a 64GB 5s, and we walked out the door with three new phones and no commitments. Over time it will cost us probably a bit extra, but the flexibility of the Next plan was worth it.
